Stage 5: Configure the XO to use Netbook Remix
As per the Ubuntu Netbook Remix installation instructions:
- Add “maximus” to System > Preferences > Sessions
- Delete bottom panel
- Setup top panel like:
GoHomeApplet|WindowPickerApplet|NotificationArea|MixerApplet|Clock - Logout and log back in
Success.
Afterthoughts:
This setup is pretty slow on the XO. I haven’t tested with straight-up GNOME-Metacity but based on the behavior I’ve observed so far I’m willing to bet it’s a lot faster than Netbook Remix. Ume-launcher has a slick visual effect that really slows things down when you need to launch software. Also, the machine locks up for 10-15 seconds at a time after applications are launched. Adding hardware video acceleration helps a lot and brings the system from “unusably slow” to “marginally usable”. The good news is that Netbook Remix is a work in progress and can be expected to get better.
The X driver for the integrated video on the OLPC is included in the default device drivers. Attached is the xorg.conf file I use on my OLPC. It’s based heavily off the one downloaded earlier and instructions on the OLPC wiki.
Good luck and happy hacking!
