Universal tests the waters of content freedom.

Vivendi’s Universal Music Group has recently disclosed its plan to release a number of upcoming albums from poplar artists, like The Black-eyed Peas, without any copy protection.

The albums will be released, through several different online and B&M vendors, between August 2007 and January 2008. The idea is to figure out what consumers will do with protection free content.

Will it increase sales, or just allow more piracy? Many would argue that nothing they do stops piracy, so any of their protection measures are just wasted money anyway. Soon, we’ll finally know if copyright protection is, in fact, a useful tool in the war on music piracy.
