Valve has come a long way in making Steam one of the most popular gaming clients for the PC. With social aspects and built-in voice chat, the platform is quite the power house—and today, it gets even better: Valve has announced an update to Steam that will implement the voice codec, SILK.
Developed and used by the voice chat behemoth Skype, SILK offers a significant improvement over Steam’s previous voice chat quality. This will affect both in-game and out-of-game chats, including group and one-on-one talk sessions. Having gamed while using both Steam Chat and Skype, I have to admit that Skype has the quality edge over Steam. This update, while seemingly minor, should be quite a welcome one to many gamers.
