Verizon announced yesterday that it has completely restructured the plans it will offer new and existing customers going forward.
The new plans took effect yesterday, January 18, and make the following changes:
Voice plans
All Verizon voice plans now offer unlimited nights and weekends and unlimited calling to other Verizon customers. Additionally, plans with 900 minutes or more can choose five numbers on any carrier and receive unlimited calling to those numbers.
- 450 minutes: $39.99
- 900 minutes: $59.99 (Unlimited calling to five phone numbers)
- Unlimited: $69.99
As can be seen, the price of calling has been reduced significantly, particularly for the unlimited voice package which has fallen by $30.
Texting plans
Customers interested in texting can now bundle text messages with their voice plan by selecting a “Talk and Text” plan from Verizon. In addition to the specified minutes (450, 900 or unlimited), the plan also includes unlimited text messages.
- Talk and Text 450: $59.99
- Talk and Text 900: $79.99
- Talk and Text Unlimited: $89.99
Limited texting plans also remain, and they offer the specified number of messages to any carrier, in addition to an unlimited number of texts within the Verizon network.
- 250 messages: $5
- 500 messages: $10
- 1500 messages: $15
- 5000 messsages: $20
Data plans
Data, meanwhile, has received one of the biggest overhauls. Verizon has stratified their phone offerings into three categories: Simple Feature Phones, 3G Multimedia Phones (like the LG Chocolate Touch) and 3G Smartphones (like the Motorola Droid).
Simple Feature and 3G Multimedia phones may choose between no data or 25MB/month, while 3G Smartphones are required to have a $29.99 unlimited data plan, or a $44.99 plan which offers unlimited data and cloud syncing for email, contacts, tasks and calendars. Smart people will buy the $29.99 plan and use Google Sync.
- 25MB: $9.99
- Unlimited: $29.99
- Unlimited with cloud sync: $44.99
As usual, the definition of “unlimited” is really 5GB per month.
Customers looking to adjust their plans to fit the new pricing may currently do so without penalty or contract extension. Users looking to bail on Verizon for another carrier should also use this opportunity to jump ship without ETF, as price adjustments represent breach of contract and leverage to escape without fees.
