Wal*Mart cans DRM, screws customers

Once upon a time, Wal*Mart joined the legions of corporate drones who felt DRM was a good idea. In the tide of music stores that tried to play against iTunes, Wal*Mart’s “ME TOO!” service offered WMA tracks protected with WM9 and WM10 DRM. Unfortunately for Wal*Mart, like most “ME TOO!” music services, their music store fared none too well.

Enter 9 October, 2008 when Wal*Mart will put their service to the axe and end the licensing servers which allows users to play their music. If the music purchased prior to February 2008 is transferred to another computer or resides on a PC that has been formatted, the music can no longer be licensed and becomes unplayable. Wal*Mart suggests that users circumvent copyright protection by burning the music to CD which will strip the DRM.

But never fear, Wal*Mart is working hard to make their music store better than ever.

Not sure if it's worth noting, but I've seen it twice before as well. They always seem to be fixed the next time I visit the thread.
