Update: We went to THQ … HQ… and got hands-on with the game. Read our Space Marine preview!
THQ has announced a public release date for the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine demo, as well as some dates for certain special groups, most of whom get to see the demo early.
The demo will be released to the general public on August 23. PS3 owners will get the demo on August 24th.
For those in the “special” groups, different demo release dates are available. Folks who pre-order the digital version through Steam will receive early access starting today, August 18, while Space Marine “Honour Guard” community members will be able to play the demo on August 22, one day before the demo’s public launch.
The Space Marine demo features two very different areas of the game. The first pits the player against an Ork horde outside the gates of a munitions factory. Armed with six devastating weapons, including the iconic bolter and lethal chainsword, the player will get to experience Space Marine’s seamless mix of melee and ranged combat first hand as they take on the rampaging invaders. The second area gives players a taste of the exhilarating Jump Pack sequences where the game’s hero—Captain Titus—takes to the skies to rain death from above.
Not coincidentally, the same period of early access will be accompanied by a Steam sale focused on a Warhammer 40,000 bundle which ends Monday, August 22 at 10:00AM Pacific Time.
For those not in the know, Warhammer 40,000 is a universe with a long history covering tabletop games, video games, and fiction. Many different races and factions comprise this universe—there are Human groups such as the Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and Chaos Space Marines; the elf-like and psychic Eldar and Dark Eldar; the Orks; the techology-focused Tau; the hive-minded Tyranids; and the life-hating, skeletal Necrons. Each race and faction is entrenched in war with the other factions. Official campaigns from Games Workshop played out on the tabletop game have affected the primary storyline. Other stories within the universe have played out on the PC through the Dawn of War series which spans two real-time strategy games, and their various expansion packs.
