Kethark in an alternate universe
Downloading the WAR trial was an all-day procedure (just like some… ahem.. other MMOs). When I finally got it installed and updated, I was presented with nothing more than a title screen and faction selection screen.
I think they are assuming that I am familiar with MMOs. Luckily, I am—but if this had been my very first foray into MMO games, I would have felt slightly put off. WHY am I here, WHICH faction should I choose, WHAT is going on here?
In order to try to get away from my WoW roots as much as possible, I chose a faction, race, and class that I have no experience with. I chose a Human Bright Wizard for the Order.
I have to say that the feeling of “war” is tangible in this game, from the very first moment. I appeared in a starting village, with a cottage in flames, swords ringing, and people fighting all around me. So far, everywhere I’ve gone in game has had the same sense of “shit is going down.” I have yet to find a peaceful glade, and haven’t had time to explore just for the scenery. I’m too busy fighting a war.
I didn’t have much trouble figuring out the interface. The MMO interface conventions are seemingly standardized by this point. I didn’t have to learn anything, I just jumped in and started playing, and doing quests.
I alt-tabbed out of the game, and when I came back, all of the textures were blue. It was disappointing.
So far I haven’t garnered much from the lore. I have been reading books and all the quests as I get them, and it’s hard for me to get over the hokey voice acting (I swear they used the exact same three people for everything – and they’re all the people from Fable with their over-the-top “I’m a peasant villager from England” accent) but apparently there is war between the forces of good and the forces of evil. Earth shattering stuff, I know.
