The developers of the upcoming Playstation 3 title Warhawk have devised a solution to a conundrum facing PS3 gamers everywhere. Instead of everyone on earth connecting to a global Sony-controlled game server (a la Microsoft Xbox Live), individuals can start their own game servers which will be able to hook up to the central servers for stats and ranking info. This basically turns the “IGN” (Integrated Gaming Network) into a distributed game server, very similar to the way Stanford University’s Folding@Home works.
Game director Dylon Jobe says, “First, since Warhawk is a global online game, our IGS method scatters game servers quite literally into player’s homes all over the planet — the US, China, Europe, Australia, and Japan! No matter where you live, what time you want to play, or what language you speak, you’ll always be able to get your game on.”
