What does the new Deus Ex: Human Evolution gameplay video do for our expectations?

Feature image

Eidos Interactive has just unleashed a new video for the hotly anticipated game Deus Ex: Human Evolution. Unveiled at the German game show Gamescom, the video is the first to reveal gameplay footage of the third installment in the Deus Ex canon. We all have intense expectations for a new Deus Ex game, and this gameplay footage lends credence to our hopes and/or fears.

Released way back in 2000, Deus Ex is one of the finest examples of an FPS/RPG hybrid, and the game is considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time. It had a rich and complex story, brilliant dialogue, and gameplay depth unlike anything ever seen before at the time. It rocked the worlds of shooters, action, and stealth games. Ten years later, Deus Ex is a game that still enjoys installation life on many gamer’s hard drives.

When its sequel, titled Invisible War, came out four years later, the rabid fanbase was met with terrible disappointment as the game was dumbed down to be a simultaneous release on consoles in addition to PC. The game was one of the earliest titles to feature a fully interactive rigid body dynamics system integrated for physics, and it was terribly buggy and clunky. Beyond technical problems, the game was marred by a weak and confusing story, forgettable characters, and the removal of the majority of RPG elements that gamers loved in the original title. Warren Spector had let gamers down worldwide.

It is because of that massive disappointment in Invisible War that so many gamers are waiting with reserved excitement for Deus Ex: Human Evolution. We want the series to return to its RPG hybrid roots, but that original setup did not translate well to the consoles. As Human Evolution is planned to be a multi-platform release at launch, we can assume that this means the game will remain in the vein of Invisible War—a more action-focused game without the depth that the original title enjoyed. Many gamers today are totally happy with fast paced gameplay and flashy action sequences, so perhaps the only ones with potential to be let down by Human Evolution are the old gamers hanging on to the past.

Depending on your perspective, the new video will either bring relief or rage. The video showcases some very intense firefights featuring a cover system and iron sights. Much of the video tends to be action-centric. This may be a cause for concern with anyone still trying to remove the bad taste from their mouths left by Invisible War.

Though the video doesn’t really showcase any particular RPG elements, it does display some of the special abilities and augmentations that have made the previous games stand out. Two such examples are a sort of x-ray vision and super strength. In the video, the player is able to see an enemy through a wall, and with his strength, smash through wall and break the sentry’s neck before he even senses what is happening.

I have a feeling that Deus Ex: Human Evolution will deliver the same sort of experience that is so prevalent today in the style of futuristic action shooter. That isn’t to suggest that the game is going to suck, though—quite the contrary. But if the game shapes up to be like that, then it will not be the sequel that long time fans deserve. That being said, the game looks very cool and stylish, and I will hold my thoughts until I’m playing the game.

Gamers will have to watch the video and come to their own conclusion on what to expect from Deus Ex: Human Evolution. Though it may be nigh impossible to match the brilliance of the original game, here’s to hoping that what we’re seeing in this video leads to a better experience than Invisible War was able to manage. The gameplay and presentation does look much more polished in Human Evolution, and Square Enix’s involvement gives hope for the storytelling aspect. Despite the positives, you can’t blame gamers for being nervous about this one, though.

Deus Ex: Human Evolution is planned for a February 28th release in 2011 on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

ardichoke Oh Deus Ex, how I love thee. The game is still installed on my computer (and I'm probably going to go home and play it after reading this). I'm not amongst the throngs of people that said Invisible War was a terrible game. It didn't live up to it's epic roots, but it was still alright. I just hope they go back to more of the original style with far more open worlds, lots of exploration, the ability to approach everything in a plethora of different ways and a more in depth RPG element. Given the dumbing down of most games recently, I'm not going to hold my breath.

It had a rich and complex story
Deus Ex story was the bastard offsping of a hundred and one conspiracy theories beaten into something vaguely resembling a plot.

IMO it was only slightly better than the Hong Kong voice acting. :p

    This.
PC users should install the texture pack and if you don't continually compare it to Deus Ex it's a decent, though distinctly average, game.
  3. Nemikan
Nemikan The original Deus Ex is on my list of best games ever created... The 2nd one I heard such bad things about that I didn't even buy it. From everything I've heard about the 3rd one, their goal is to make it a ton like the first. I'm excited about this game, and fairly certain it will be a big hit :)
  4. Obsidian
Obsidian The first trailer was one of my favorites of all time. The second makes it look way too much like MGS4 for my taste (though MGS4 was pretty amazing). I'm really hoping it does something new and has the atmosphere and passion of the first trailer.

    YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH, BASIL!

Kidding, of course, though I do disagree. The conspiracy plot was definitely sampled from many other things, but for that time in video games, no one had every done anything like that before. Half-Life, only a year before it, was still one of the better examples of storytelling in games. Deus Ex took it to the next level.

And though I was tough on it in the article, I did enjoy Invisible War when it came out. I played it all the way through. It is in no one comparable to the first, and it cannot escape such a comparison when it is a sequel.

Winfrey The difference between Deus Ex and its encore is simple for me. I've played and completed both games. For Deus Ex I can tell you about all the different ways to beat a mission, or where to find all the augmentation canisters, or how the plot can change by you taking a different action (albeit in a somewhat limited fashion.) All I can tell you about Invisible War is that I think you start out in your apartment for the first mission. That's about it. One experience was clearly enjoyable and memorable while the other was average and somewhat forgettable.

I want what I didn't get in Invisible War, a true exceptional sequel that Deus Ex deserves.
  10. UPSLynx
UPSLynx That was a bad day for typing :sawed:

Winfrey just summed it up nicely. One experience has been very memorable, and the other was simply forgettable.

There is no reason why they couldn't/can't create an RPG like experience for the consoles similar to the first game. There was nothing preventing them then and there is certainly nothing preventing them now. There are plenty of FPS/RPG games out on consoles that have proven this. If the new Dues-Ex is dumbed down it's by choice not technical limits placed on designing it for a console.

So with that in consideration I'm still optimistic about the new Dues-Ex just not holding my breath.

kryyst Played through the demo, it's fun. But honestly I'll wait until it comes down in price. I can't quite place my finger on it but for whatever reason it didn't seem to hold my attention. I can't even really pick out any flaws with the game. It's a good game that lots of people will love. I liked it just not $60 liked it. I think part of it may be that I'm more anxiously anticipating GoW3 in about a month.

Call me dumbed down then but I had zero fun sorting through all the thousands of items I got from each and every enemy I killed just to find the armor with one more defense than the one I'm already wearing. Then passing down items to other characters so that everyone has the best equipment I can give them.

The switch from infinite ammo and quickly overheated weapons to no over heat plus ammo was dumb IMO.

Anyway I'm disappointed from what I've seen of Human Evolution so far. I played through the first DX and never killed unless absolutely necessary and it looks like I can only kill now... and that makes me a sad panda.
  25. Thrax
Thrax You can choose stealth or killing gameplay at the outset of the game. It's an option in the introductory scene.

Only problem, Paul and J.C. were clones according to the original Deus Ex (at least according to the Deus Ex Wiki) Also, game takes place in 2027, Paul Denton was 'born' in 2018.

No at the start of each mission you are asked how you want to approach it and all that does is give you your weapon layout for the mission. So if you pick the frontal approach you'll get a submachine gun and a shotgun, if you say I prefer stealth you'll get a taser and a silenced pistol if you choose I prefer to kill from a far you'll get a sniper rifle and a pistol.

But once you are in the mission there are no bumpers that will prevent you from changing up your styles if you say go in stealth and get bored and want to start shooting the place up you can.

There may be some missions that have specific goals that could change based on how you approach it but as a rule you don't choose stealth (for example) and then are locked into having to stealth that mission.
  40. Koreish

True, I didn't notice that at first. Still, if you look at the trailers, it doesn't look like he's a father. Seems to live quite the bachelor life. Clone daddy... maybe, but I doubt it.

EDIT: There's been a bunch of videos added to Steam for this, including some behind the scenes stuff with the developers. It looks like they're going back to the classic Deus Ex control scheme for PC. I'm excited, no more crappy watered down, consolized controls!

Actually if you do a Stealth Combat route you'll find that enemies can be incredibly stupid at times. I'll never understand how I can take down a guy two feet behind another guy and not have him turn around. Even silent take downs aren't all that silent. Especially the arm breaking one.
