The lore is as old as time; a princess is captured, a heroic gentleman risks life and limb in pursuit, the villain is defeated and the princess is rescued. Classic literature, film, and now video games have followed this timeless formula. The story does beg the question, though—what happens after the last boss is defeated, and the princess falls into the arms of her savior? Typically, we’re told that they live happily ever after, and rarely do we get to see what happens after the beautiful damsel in distress is rescued from the clutches of evil. Until now.
Studio Joho, an animation company based out of Brisbane, created a short film to explore just what happens after the credits roll in a video game. The short, titled Dan the Man, is designed with the same style and limitations of a 16-bit SNES side-scroller. Dan is a typical Double Dragon-esque fighter that defeats evil and gains the favor of the princess, and only then discovers the true enemy of his story. It is a tale of heroism, greed, debt, and triumph.
Despite the simplicity of the visuals, Dan the Man could quite possibly be the most realistic video game of all time.
