Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 has risen to become the fastest-selling operating system in the history of computers. This momentum has allowed Microsoft to post record results for 1QFY10 (October 1, 2009 – December 31, 2009).
Launched globally on October 22, Microsoft has sold over 60 million Windows licenses, making it the fastest-selling OS in history. According to research firm Netmarketshare.com, Windows 7 finds a home on some 7.5% of all personal computers. Though that number is considerably lower than Windows XP (66.3%), it is higher than all versions of Mac OS combined.
“Exceptional demand for Windows 7 led to the positive top-line growth for the company. Our continuing commitment to managing costs allowed us to drive earnings performance ahead of the revenue growth,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft.
Microsoft announced a record revenue of $19.02 billion for the first fiscal quarter of 2010 ending December 31, 2009, or an increase of 14% from the previous year. Other finances were equally impressive: Operating income was up 43% to $8.51 billion, net income was up 60% to $6.66 billion and diluted shares per earning was up 57% to $0.74 per share.
“This is a record quarter for Windows units,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. “We are thrilled by the consumer reception to Windows 7 and by business enthusiasm to adopt Windows 7.”
