Microsoft yesterday confirmed that it is in the process of developing the first service pack for Windows 7.
“For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update,” wrote Microsoft spokesman Matt LeBlanc. “SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2.”
RemoteFX is a new technology Microsoft is adding to its virtualization stack. The new technology allows clients running remote desktops to smoothly access Silverlight, Flash, full-motion video, Aero and other GPU-intensive processes on the LAN. In other words, RemoteFX is a way for users get the full desktop experience out of an RDP session established with a remote server. While some home users will find this useful, the feature is primarily for businesses looking to save money by shifting the computing burden of the desktop experience to a server. This will allow for cheaper client machines.
The remaining updates, LeBlanc noted, will be a roll-up of patches and updates that have already been deployed via the Windows Update Service.
A timetable for the service pack’s debut has not yet been confirmed, but a September/October launch has been frequently cited since the summer months of ’09.
