Windows Mobile 7 coming soon

Microsoft CFO Peter Klein unveiled this week in an interview conducted by Fox News that the firm will have “much more to say” about Windows Mobile 7 at this year’s Mobile. WorldCongress in Barcelona.

The GSMA Mobile. WorldConference, held annually in Spain, is the world’s largest expo for the mobile industry. With more than 1300 exhibitors; 230 carrier, OEM, ODM and software chief executives; 2,700 members of the press; and more than 55,000 total visitors, the WorldConference is the place to be if you, like Microsoft, have a landmark product to unveil.

Little is known of Windows Mobile 7, however, as the company has shrouded the project in secrecy after it was delayed in lieu of the uninspired Windows Mobile 6.5, which debuted at the 2009 MWC. Despite a veil of silence, Microsoft has prompted wide speculation by citing that the project will offer a premium experience comparable to other competing devices. Rumors surrounding the mobile OS include:

  • A revamped UI based on Silverlight, multi-touch and touch gestures;
  • A revamped Microsoft Office Mobile;
  • A redone Internet Explorer Mobile;
  • A new media player inspired by the acclaimed Zune HD GUI;
  • Automatic OTA upgrades a la Android and Palm Pre;
  • and an extension of the Xbox LIVE platform, including avatars, games and social web

Though it is unknown when WinMo 7-based devices will debut, announcements from LG have suggested the August-October time frame.

    chrisWhite I would really like to try this, if you could actually upgrade Windows Mobile on old devices. Do they still make Windows Mobile hardware that can't upgrade or did that die a while ago? I doubt I'd be very impressed but I've become a big fan of Bing recently and I love the Zune as well as the Xbox Live platform so it's intriguing.

    Thrax WinMo phones can upgraded, but I suspect only fairly recent and robust models like the HTC HD2 and Sony-Ericsson XPERIA X2 will get the nod.
