A report entitled “Governing the Internet,” issued Yesterday by the 56-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), warns that some countries are placing strong restrictions on the use of the internet, a medium intended for free and open use.
A few governments, including Kazakhstan and Georgia, have placed restrictions on bloggers and web publishers restricting them from speaking out against the government or it’s institutions. Other’s, such as Malaysia, restrict anti-Islam rhetoric.
Organizations like the OSCE believe that all governments have an ethical obligation to allow free access to the internet to all of their people, and that steps should be taken to ensure that they do.
