Namco Bandai of Japan has sold the worldwide publishing rights for the Hellgate franchise to HanbitSoft, a major Korean developer of online games.
The semi-successful Hellgate: London, developed by the fledgling Flagship Studios, was originally scheduled to be followed by sequels and MMO-style online play. When Flagship Studios folded, however, all plans were abandoned in the US.
Namco Bandai has since allowed HanbitSoft, Hellgate’s Korean marketing team, to continue creating patches and content updates for the game, and to release a sequel called Hellgate: Resurection. This move likely means that Hellgate: Resurection will soon see a US release.
HanbitSoft has not yet announced whether they also plan to follow Flagship Studios’ original intentions to create an MMO with the franchise, but judging by HanbitSoft’s other major projects, including Camon Hero, an MMOCCG and Tantra, an MMORPG, one can assume it is likely.
