YouTube video length increased to 15 minutes

YouTube released the news today that it is increasing the length of YouTube videos from ten to fifteen minutes for all account holders. It has long been the single most requested new feature by fans.

The popular video service said that the main reason it was able to increase the video time limit was because of the Content ID system, which is now better than ever. The system allows music labels, movie studios, and others to quickly scan through all of YouTube to find videos that violate their copyright. Once these videos are found, copyright owners can choose to automatically remove the content, make money off of it, or track stats on it.

YouTube wants users to take advantage of the time increase by making a video about their fifteen minutes of fame. The video would convey everything that fans want the world to know about them in fifteen minutes. Those wishing to submit their videos should tag them with “yt15minutes,” and upload them by August 4th. The best videos will be featured on the YouTube homepage.

photodude isn't that a violation of the h.264 license that youTube has? I thought they were capped at upto 12 minutes for free content based on the license rather then any technical or other reasons(unless youtube is now paying more for their license or MpegLA has changed their license agreements of h.264 content.

Cliff_Forster photodude, you say that as if it would matter to Google? Google purchased youtube knowing full well that it was a site more or less built around stealing intellectual property.
