alright, i was watching some video file, and all of a sudden the video stopped, and then comp froze, so i turn the comp off and turn it back on.
after i turned it back on, my 80gig wd didn't get detected, and that was the drive i had my OS partition on.
so i thought WTF, i turn it back off, and then opened the case, and pull the cables off and put it back on, turned the comp back on, the drive got detected again.

and now i'm thinking WTF WTF WTF??

my setup is
Primary master: 80 gig WD 8mb cache
Primary slave: none
Secondary master: 120 gig maxtor 8mb cache
Secondary slave: 40 gig WD 2mb cache

the OS was install on 80 gig wd, and the file i was playing was off the maxtor.

Virus? I have the same issue. If it is making more noise than usual, it is probably about to die. Back-up NOW!!!!! ou might run CHKDSK on that drive and see if it finds any issues. Maxtor should have a drive health Dl on it's site as well. Might want to check it out...

What Justin said - back up immediately; then run Maxtor's hard drive diagnostic software. If it is a drive failure or defect, look forward to good service from Maxtor. I used their online RMA process. It worked perfectly.

Ummm...Maxtor won't replace his Western Digital drive and you have a goodly wait to look forward to with WD if my experience is any indicator.
The new WD Lifeline software will diagnose your problems pretty well I figure.

Use whatever utilities you have to diagnose along with maxtor's. Disk Investagator (C-net) is a solid program, it can show you code in your HD that is giving it issues. Again though, Back-up IMMEDIATELY. You don't want to loose anything if you can help it. With those other dirves, if it is a virus causing an issue, you may want to get diagnosis software from the manufacturer of those drves and check them out too. As a precautionary measure, http://www.iolo.com/sm is a good program if you DL the Pro version. It can help you clean up the drives so the viruses and other issues don't have as many places to hide. Just a suggestion...

OK, I read the post too fast. I don't think Maxtor's diagnostic utility will be compatible with your WD drive. Sorry, but I just saw the Maxtor part of your original post.

Go to the link I sent above and see if your system will let you work through the steps (kinda like drive 12-step program, But really 4) Either way, get your stuff moved or backed up now. Pull the drive and see if you have any further issues. IMO, Hd are the most important item in your PC. I have lost enough I should know. Move the data, see if you get the same error on a different drive and make your diagnosis by that info.

Hmm. The cables weren't loose were they? The reason I asked if it was on a SATA adapter is because every single stinking SATA adapter I have-4 HighPoints, 2 ABITs-are crap. If you so much as sneeze around them, they'll stop working. And then you have to spend an hour pushing and pulling on them to get them to work again. But since your drives aren't using SATA adapters, all I can think of is that maybe one of the cables was a bit loose and the case got bumped or something.

It could just be a bad cable too. I've had a cable that I was using in my shuttle do that with my DVD-RW and moving it to the other connector fixed the problem...stupid split cables

the same thing was happening to me a few weeks back ...I ordered a new raptor to take my dying quantums place. Then someone with a similar problem pointed out that it may be caused by the tweak (ACPI uniprocessor PC) everyone was doing back then. I undid the tweak and all has been well ever since. I still use the dying quantum with no issues whatsoever.
So ... you did the tweak trying going back to the stock driver.
