The big debate on Silenx PSUs --- which are legit and good

yaggayagga Havn't you heard? ... New
edited May 2004 in Hardware
I have heard some good stuff about these, but also have heard of a lot of counterfeiting and stuff along those lines. Anyone know what's up here? The www.silenx.com website is the real legit site then?

Well, I don't know about their PS's, but their "silent" fans are crap. :thumbsdow Ungodly expensive, move next to no air. Sure, their silent, they don't do anything!
Sorry, don't mean to vent

vent all you like! :rarr::mean: :Rocker: ;D I need to hear all the bad things about them first, cause I am very judging and have extroardinary hearing when it comes to "silent" things and it bugs me to death. :banghead:

Ha, you need hearing like mine - permanent ringing in the background!

OK, on topic. Make sure that with any fan comparison you weigh factors of both decibels and volume of air moved. Although I've not tried anything Silenx, I've had my share of "quiet" running fans that were simply quiet because they simply moved very little air. Best noise to air volume ratio in my experience is Panaflo L series and Papst. Panaflos can be found reasonably priced at almost any large trading forum, or new at almost-reasonable prices. Papst are very solid, built for 100,000 hours MTBF; but you pay for the Germany quality.

    www.silenx.com is the real deal.

    Reviewage here.

SilenX power supplies are rebranded FSP made power supplies if I remember correctly. FSP does some modifications of their OEM PSU for SilenX.

I know everyone's gonna say "ARE YOU INSANE!?!?"... but... if you want silent, and have a lot of $, you should get a watercooled PSU.

Silent, yes, but also very, very, VERY risky. Watercooling PSUs is a really, REALLY bad idea, IMO. That is, as long as they're not designed to be water cooled, which some (not computer) PSes are... But converting an air cooled PSU to a water cooled one is the computer equivalent of driving a bright red viper with a neon yellow flame paintjob, open pipes, a "Bad Cop, No Donut" bumper sticker, and a 10' tall blinking neon sign saying "I want a ticket" bolted to the roll bar past a cop convention at 160mph. It's just not a good idea.

No, that will just get you a ticket. Watercooling a PSU is the computer equivalent to taking a shower with a running hair dryer. Want to take a chance on it leaking?

On the bright side, if you're there when the WC system springs a leak, you get to see a really expensive system make a really spectacular death.
