Spyware, Popups and People on People

Greetings!
I come in search of hope. As a computer technician I pride myself on having a clean machine, at least until an annoying sibling started downloading things. I've run Ad-Aware over a hundred times (updated!) trying to clean everything off. It comes up with more spyware even immediately after finishing a search. People on People is one of the top offenders. The pop ups are killing me. Spybot won't update--it freezes--so I ran it without updates and cleared off what it found. Here's my HijackThis log if anyone is lovely enough to help. I was also wondering about the three svchost.exe that are running. See any processes I can end?
Thanks in advance,
Michelle

First off, make sure you're using version 1.3 of spybot search and destroy, and I find that when the updater freezes try changing the server, usually the US based ones work. If you can't get it to update after that, try downloading the def file(it's an exe) from their site and just running the file on your hdd.

    C:\documents and settings\chelle\local settings\temp\AsmeJ.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\xqxngg.exe
Those both look suspicious to me, so take them out of msconfig, and while you're in there, you can kill
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    :\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

I'm not too sure about the rest, but that would be a good start.

When you are done, please security update LSASS on that box if you have not yet done so (MS04-011 through MS04-14 should do that well and catch some other major holes also). there are a bunch of trojans that exploit the LSASS hole now, Sasser and Korgo most commonly. Second, run HJT after a safe mode boot if you have not done so, cut-n-paste the log to a NotePad file, save as text, then open notepad in regular mode or better yet copy file to a floppy, stick floppy in another box and go online from that box, leave your box off the web in safe mode, and we will look here at what you cut-n-paste into the message post here from that file.

Trend Micro's Housecall might be a very good idea to remote-run on that box ( http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp ), some of the LSASS exploiters also can disable AV applications-- so far, I know of none that have been able to do this to F-Prot, the trial download snapshot of that might also be a good thing to run ( http://www.f-prot.com ). Bitdefender also has trials available for it. SpyBot S&D is definitely a recommended thing to run, in safe mode after updating it on the web before you take the box off the web.

Well crap I didnt know you could change servers. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Sybot is pretty much junk now tho since they stopped updating it.

They only stopped updating version 1.2, I installed 1.3 on my new install last night and they had def files from the 29th of may, or there abouts.

Spybot 1.3 is still being updated very regularly. It is still my anti-scumware program of choice.

Thanks to everyone for the help. DanG's suggestion about changing servers worked. I got Spybot S&D to update and it found a whopping 278 things to fix, most of them from CoolWWWSearch.

Before I started deleting things, I noticed Windows Media Player wouldn't work. I tried reinstalling it but no change. Software isn't my forte, so any suggestions? Could it be spyware related?

I deleted what Mr. Kwitko suggested and updated lsass like John D said. I still have multiple svchost running, is that normal? Also, does anyone know what C:\WINDOWS\System32\phound3d.exe is? Here's my new HijackThis log, but it's not from safe mode. When I run it in safe mode, I have significantly less exploits listed. Some of the ones Mr. Kwitko listed were only visable in when I didn't boot in safe mode. Let me know if I need to post the log from safe mode too. Thanks

Okay, get rid of the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://omegasearch.com/searchbar.html
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [L0r9RQHni] phound3d.exe

For performance increase, get rid of the following unnecessary items:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\jusched.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

You should also pick one or the other - google toolbar or MSN toolbar.

That phound3D thing is a problem. That's the one we're going to try to get rid of.

Reboot a couple of times, open internet explorer a couple of times, and the post a new HJT log. I just want to make sure there's no hidden reloaders or anything. :D

Oh yeah, one other thing: Read about our folding team and then consider joining our community and our team :)

    wow! I missed that!

    Geminisrevenge:

Boot into safe mode, and manually delete c:\windows\sytem32\phound3d.exe

While in that folder, I'd sort by date. If you see a suspicious group of DLLs or EXEs that are very recent (within the last month or so), I'd suspect them of being malicious.

I've deleted the realsched.exe and the phound3d.exe in safe mode, but they both keep coming back. I know the realsched thing isn't a big problem, but I'd like it gone along with the other.

All I could find on phound3d.exe was this:

Looks like a virus to me. Are you sure you have the latest AV definitions in your system? Have you done a full scan of your OS drive/partition?

It's an updater that does nothing useful, unless you count using your RAM as useful :)
