GHoosdum is sitting next to me at his computer playing his newly aquired 'Doom 3', a game which I have yet to partake.

He has been exlaiming constantly since 'all hell broke loose'

Here are some choice quotes:

"Oh S**T!"

"Who's shooting me?!"

"Crap!"

"AAHHH!!!"

"How many bullets does this damn thing-?! Okay..."

"I think I need to turn up the gamma..."

So, Just listening to him play this game, makes me want to play.

IMHO the game is overrated. The graphics and music are cool, but everything else sucks. It's a "mindless shoot everything that moves" type of game. Reminds me of Serious Sam. It's fun for the first 10mins.

Maybe you are Roland Gunslinger who has only felt terror once in his life, and then only at the condition of his own soul...

    or

Maybe you have your Gamma set too high...

I had fun for over an hour so far...

It reminds me more of Half-Life than anything else in the FPS genre...

My thoughts echo Rob's, at a fairly early 2 hours or so stage. Keep the gamma down, keep the tension high. It's definitely NOT shoot everything that moves, there are many moving shadows from machinery, plus some friendlies you don't want to tank.

Ya, I've let out a few choice epithets as I'm being clubbed or gnawed on from behind in the dark. :eek2:

It was, as expected, completely overhyped and overblown. It is not a great game, it just has great graphics. I'm still enjoying it, it's fun, but not worth the money, IMO. If you don't have the urge to run out and buy it, wait until it's in the $30 range.

Agreed in full, I think some of the people who did the reviews are blinded by the graphics.

I think its worth the money. Its not mind blowing, but its a VERY well done game. Nothing revolutionary here, just an excellent game.

To me it's worth my $55 just to raise the standard of graphics and audio in future gaming. I think it's a step in that right direction.
The game itself is monotonous and tiring at some points and borders losing my interest ...maybe Q4 will make up for it in that respect.
It could be more exciting but I'm still having fun.
I bought it so no cheats!

Meh. I only buy one or two games a year, and Doom 3 is probably the only one for 2004. Money well spent, IMO. It scares the crap out of me at every turn. This is DOOM, remember. Get scared, shoot stuff, and see the next generation of game graphics. That's what it's made for, and that's what it delivers :)

I think it's worth $55 to force a large quantity of people to bring their rigs up to a civilized and modern level of technology. If only because that paves the way for games of superior graphical quality rather than the stagnant industry we have today thanks to Half-Life requiring so little, and being so popular.

    I agree with pseudo. :)

Some of my more common quotes include
    "Who wants some!"
    "Let's be friends!" and
    "Where'd that come from?!"

I think this game is well worth the money, but then I guess it has been a while since I played a truly great game. Doom 3 is the first game I got since Need For Speed Underground, and Warcraft 3 before that. I don't buy many games. I have other things to spend my nonexistant income on. :(

While I agree that it is worth the $55 (and I almost considered paying that much) I got the game for $2. Microcenter was selling the game for $46.87, so I price-matched it at Best Buy, then used $45 worth of Best Buy Reward certificates and after tax it cost me $2.00 even.

So far, I am really enjoying the one player game of Doom3. This is the first FPS game I have been able to fully immerse myself in the world of since Half-Life came out. It's the immersion in the world that I enjoy, which gives me the good game-play.

    Doom 3 bleh

Last boss is amazingly crappy and easy.

The game picked up for the last hour but that does not make up for the amazingly boring and repetetive gameplay, YAY find the PDA!!! ohhh look hidden monster rooms with monsters just popping out when i either get some health or i walk beyond the room. Yay imps behind the doors so they will jump out at you! like that wasn't over used in the game? And what made it worse is that because you where always in a 3 foot wide drab grey corridor they would always hit you.

Yay let's use some of the best monsters 3 times in the game and over use the imp and zombie combination. Pinky deamon? Burn zombie? Chainsaw zombie? Don't even get me on the flying bags of crap the cocodeamon which when shot would fall down like a let off woopy cushion.

Physics? What physics? Oh yes that horribly unstable piece of mess. Proper mass representation? Pft let's throw that out of the window! A stable solver? Throw that out of the window! Just make sure nothing lands on a uneven surface otherwise the engine is screwed! Justmake sure you don't knock the barrels they wont lose the energy just transfered and will just wobble for eternity.

AI! But ^Ben you say zombies don't need good AI because they are dead! Yes sir Watson but they should be able to navigate a room without becoming stuck on objects, and should be able to get to you when you are in an elevator or standing in a doorway.

    Story line ..........

Multiplayer ....... As we can see with the major bug that is present within the multiplayer at the moment which should of never got past bug testing.

Level design. Dull bland and boring, I swear the whole base is 2 bathrooms and 5 offices and 3 special rooms all connected with an endless supply of 8 metre long corridors.

General WTF. You are in a highly futureristic base and there is absoloutley no way you can attatch a flashlight to a gun? Sentry bots, theese little things kicked ass why did'nt someone deploy them all when the invasion started? Why did'nt Swan deploy them?

    I'm done for now.

    Graphics engine is amazing.

    Very quick review for me.

Yep, I agree with ^Ben's assessment. It's just not a great game. The physics are meh, the game is repetitive, and it's just "shoot zombie, run down dark hall, oh noes watch out another imp leaping at you and then the 'surprise he showed up behind me' thing".

The base is laid out in absolutely no logical fashion at all. It just makes no sense, and is very linear.

The graphics are totally amazing. The game is fun, but only $25-$30 fun, not $55 fun.

Forgot the weapons i could really get nit picky into that segment.

Shotgun is useless unless you a right next to a monster.

Oh and heres another thing i noticed. Hit the zombie with the flashlight, see how long it takes him to go down? 2 hits? now try with a pistol :|

Completly stupid. This game has a feeling of rushed about it so it could compete and hopefully compete with the other big hitters.

I think we will come back to this in a while and look at the magazines that gave this scores of high 90's and think "What in the hell were they smoking"

    Unreal 2

I like it (haven't beat it yet, just got to Hell). I love the graphics, the gameplay is exactly what I expected, and it's given me a great reason to drop another $400 on a video card (as will Half Life 2 I'm sure). The story is great (so far) as well, and I consider myself pretty well read in the sci-fi genere.

Let's face it, there isn't much else an FPS can do regarding gameplay. Every FPS will have you getting keys/PDAs/keycards. At least these PDAs also have information on story development, and allow for ways for one to gain weapons/ammo using email/voice recordings.

I agree that the FPS genre was defined by Doom and then redefined by Half-Life, and I suppose that's why I was bit disappointed because you couldn't expect this to define it again. I just didn't expect the game to be so linear, and I found the missions rather lame-duck. You follow some people for half the game, then they die, then you follow someone else, they die, then you follow another person, they die. I was a little disappointed with the interactivity of things too. I expected that when I shoot a screen... It would go out, and when I shoot a pop machine it would blow up, it seems the only things that actually moved were box-based objects. Ragdoll physics are nothing new (Their implementation in a game was already used I believe). I also thought hell would have a bit more diversity in monsters. I got tired of seeing the same damn guy everywhere in the game. The weapon sounds didn't sound real... Weaponlike to me. I mean, the pistol sounds like I'm opening a can of coke, the machine gun sounds like someone tossed a nail at a sheet of aluminum. The only two weapon sounds I found appropriate were the shotgun and chaingun. The flashlight hitsound also got me a bit ticked, it had two hit sounds, flesh and metal. What about when I hit a plastic tub or glass or something?

I know it's nitpicking the little things but attention to detail matters a lot to me.

Very valid thoughts Nomad. I have only been able to play at hour spurts lately, so I've just never thought of any of the details because of that. I agree on everything, I still think its worth it though ;)

Although, Co-Op would have been nice!!! Helllooo McFly?!?!

Did none of you people play Painkiller? THAT was a good FPS, and very original. The physics were spectacular, the story was better than doom3, it wasn't so linear, it was scary as hell in some parts, and the weapons are WAY cooler. I consider it a sleeper hit, and I personally like it better than Doom3.

Co-op would have made this awesome. It would have been sweet to play on a server with like six people, split in two teams of three, and they each have to go accomplish certain things. I don't think Doom3 has much replayability aswell, I mean, what am I doing in the game right now? Spawning helpless NPCs in packs of 30 or so and then ripping through them with a chainsaw. I actually find that more entertaining then playing the game.
  • edited August 2004
Supposedly a Co-op mod is already out. I guess it was released around the same time the game was.

You cannot see any of the cutscenes, but the most important parts of the game are there. If anny a youz wana try it with me, just lemme know and I'll get the stuff.

I don't think that's fair. Mods add to the replay value of the game. There are a buttload of mods for UT, which helps make it as great as it is. It would probably get a little bit boring with the same stuff the game ships with.

Why credit the game creators though when they did nothing for the actual creation of the mod? If anything I credit the mod teams for making a crappy game replayable.
