Hi guys!

I'm looking for a full tower to house my NF7-S v2.0 MB

I like the Chenming for ~$66 http://www.chenmingusa.com/Fulltower.html
except I'd prefer better side HD cooling ports.

Anyone have a lead for me?

Thanks again!!

I'm not sure what you mean... that case has excellent hard drive cooling. It's an excellent case. :)

The case you selected, as Geeky said, very good cooling properties. It's available under about 12 or 15 brand names. Brands include Chieftec, Antec, Chenming, and a bunch of others. You can get the same specifications in aluminum or steel, or with a side window. If you will be comparing brands and prices, don't forget to factor in the power supply unit. Some prices will look too good to be true - for a case without a PSU. If you want to purchase from a retail store, CompUSA stocks those cases.

Hey Leonardo! Nice to see you!

Well guys if you can shed light...
For that case I'd have seven HD (One in a mobile rack) one CD Burner. Would I be able to mount a line of 80mm fans on the side? and if so how many? Two? Three?

On the side? Not quite understanding you; unless you mean via cutouts in the case wall. Why would you need a row of fans?

Hey man I'm using one of those cases in silver with a fan on the side w/window. It has a ton of room, can fit 6 hdd if you dont use a floppy but only 3 will have a fan on them. Excelent cooling. Mine idles between 24c to 26c.

Only bad thing is every one and their mother has this case. Makes me sick when I go to lans. Almost every other case is a veriation of my case. but only mine has a 3800xp Mobile sticker on the front door.. muhahaha

Pro's, Great case and great cooling
Cons, Dull/plain/you can be like the joneses

I should just sell you mine and get me a new case.

Not sure what you mean? If you mean with PSU, I'm going seperate on that.

    Leonardo:
My old server case that has the ability to put 80mm fans x2 along the 5.25 bays. The case has vents for the air flow.

Different case Komete; the one he linked to will take 6 HDDs with fans on all 6; it's bigger than the one that's so popular, and far, far, FAR better.

Yeah, I have my watercooled dually in a case like that; it's the exact same case as my Antec SX1240. You have 2 removable hard drive bays in that case with 80mm fans mounted in front of them and each cage can mount 3 drives. The floppy drive mounts above the hard drive cages. That case is an excellent case, but heavy as hell. It's also sturdy as hell too.

MERRICK, I don't think you should have any problems with cooling the drives with that case. You can also mount a 92 mm fan above the psu too and use it for an exhaust, besides the 2-80mm exhaust fans by the vid card/cpu area. It also has another intake fan mount below the hard drive cages also.

on that case it has a fan mount for each drive cage that blows in over them. I have a smaller version of that case and it has an 80mm fan that blows over my 2 drives and they never really even get warm..

    Can anyone confirm if http://www.chenmingusa.com/Fulltower.html
    is the same as: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-125-467&depa=1

and if not, where can I find it.

    Thanks!

muddocktor->That big a** fan above the PSU you say is 92mm but it looks like a 120mm grill. I'm sure you're right on the 92 but does it optionally take a 120 as well?

That's a newer revision of the case; the top rear fan is 120mm, and it only has 4 HDD mounts. The cooling should be even better tho.

    Thanks Geeky1!

So for Case fans I'm looking at:
    1 120mm (rear)
    2 80mm (rear)
2 80mm (side for HD) (can I go the other side too for a total of 4 80mm HD?)
    1~3 80mm (front)

    You're looking at 1 120mm and 2 80mm rear fans, and 3 80mm front fans.

Okay so to be clear there is no option to mount fans Next to the top 5.25 bays only in those three cages on the front.

So is there an advantage to using HD 5.25 coolers like:
    http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=XMKL299
    http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=XMKL399

I'm asking because these HDs will be on full time (no ACPI/APM, either I'm in a recording session or the computer is off). And I want those HDs to run as cool as I can. I have HD coolers on my current rig in fact.

How many hard drives will you have?

Okay (and the your other SATA thread reply sure helped me on this one!)

    IDE Channel 1 Master 40GB ATA 133
    IDE Channel 1 Slave 80GB ATA 133
IDE Channel 2 Master 80GB ATA 133 in mobile rack (wfan)
IDE Channel 2 Slave LiteOn CDr-RW burner

    SATA Channel 1 80GB RAID 0 disk 0
    SATA Channel 2 80GB RAID 0 disk 1

How would you cool that? (I'd love to not get individual coolers if I could)

Put 4 of them in the drive cage at the top rear of the case and put a 5.25" bay cooler (not the ones you linked to tho) on the other one.

Oh I'm seeing better. I didn't realize that those rear things werre for HD's (kinda close to the PSU though)

    So I put:
SATA 1 in cage slot one
SATA 2 in cage slot two
IDE 1 master in cage slot three
IDE 1 slave in cage slot four
IDE 2 master (mobile rack) in a front bay
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-121-106&depa=0
IDE 2 slave CD burner in a front bay

I wouldn't need an HD cooler at all then right?

So is there an advantage to using HD 5.25 coolers like:
You can also use 80mm fans. When you install the hard drives in the bays, just have them one notch farther towards the middle of the case. This leaves room to mount fands next to the case front face. With any type of cooling device near a hard drive though, insulate it against vibration with felt or rubber grommets. Apparently, vibrations can cause the early death of hard drives.

    Thanks Leonardo.

Right now I like that rear cage config. The mobile Rack drive in the front bay (IDE 2 Master) has a built in fan.

The only thing that makes me nervous is the magnetic field of the PSU so close to the drives. Is this common practice now?

    edited September 2004
I don't have any factual information, but I would think that the drive bay itself would shield the hard drive from any stray magnetism from the PSU.
  • edited September 2004
Hey, MERRICK, I didn't see that they had changed the layout for the hard drives inside the case. On my SX1240, I removed the lower drive bay to install my radiator in the lower front. If you will pay the shipping, I will send the lower drive bay and mounting rail to you out of my SX1240 and you can mount it in front of the top or middle front fan, just like it's mounted in my Antec case. All you would need to do to mount it in that case is to use a few pop rivets to mount the rail and it would give you room for 3 more fan cooled drives without getting into your 5 1/4 drive bays.

EDIT: The next case down on the list at Newegg is one like mine, here's a link to it. Also, here's a pic of the layout of my case from Newegg's site:
