Folding Problems

I think i'm folding, well, I should be but i'm not sure whats going on  ?

Also, FahCore_65.exe is running in Task Manager but it doesn't seem right (see image). CPU Usage is 100%, FahCore_65.exe CPU is around 90+ and Internet is really slow due to this. Can anyone help me out Please?

Thanks

The default for fah is to run at idle priority, which won't affect internet usage at all. The only time fah accesses the internet is when it send/receives work units. This will affect internet usage but the time it takes to send/receive is quite nominal and doesn't last long at all. I'd begin to look at other reasons that your internet is slowing down besides fah.

Yeah I know F@H shouldn't affect the internet but have you seen the image in my 1st post. CPU Usage is 100% and look at F@H within the processes - it doesn't seem right.

Also, I don't know if I'm folding properly or if I've completed any WU's, its been a week now. :shakehead

    Thanks

F@H is supposed to be at 99% when your system is idle. The core is designed to use only spare cycles, so if you use a process that takes up 20% of your CPU cycles, F@H will drop down to 80% usage.

I don't think that F@H is affecting your internet speed. Stop F@H for a bit and check your speed. Chances are they will be exactly the same. Also, post a copy of FAHlog.txt here so we can see if there are any errors.

I just went to my F@H folder and there are the 3 FAHlogs which are called FAHlog.txt, FAHlog2.txt and FAHlog-Prev.txt. Which 1 should I post?
Also, there are 2 applications called FahCore_65.exe and FahCore_78.exe

When you mentioned to try and stop F@H do you mean Ending the Process in Task Manager

    Thanks, appreciate the help :)

Folding at home uses two processes. FAH core 65 or 78 (core 81 also now) is the part that actually does the work with crunching the numbers. FAH console is merely the facilitator. When the core signals that the work unit is completed, the console with then send the completed work unit and download another work unit to be computed. It's completely normal for task manager to look like that. If you want to perform your own little test to see if FAH is behaving the way it should be, start up disk defragmenter or another program that you know uses quite a bit of cpu power. FAH core will reduce itself automatically and allow the other program to use whatever cpu cycles it needs to complete its task. You can run benchmarking programs with and without fah running to verify that fah is "getting out of the way" properly. You should only see about a 1-2% difference (allows for margins of error) with and without fah running. FAH is quite well behaved in this respect. Idle priority means that FAH will only use CPU cycles that are left over from your regular programs that you are running. If other programs demand attention they will get it first before FAH. If you wish to see the progress of your current work unit and see if you've transmitted a work unit, there are a few files within the folding at home directory that you can look at to see how things are going. The first file to look at is a file called "unitinfo.txt". It merely shows how much of the current work unit you have completed. The next file is "FAHlog.txt". It will tell you a few other things in addition to the percentage that you have completed. Below is copied from my fahlog.txt file.

Much of this is self explanatory. As you can see in the middle of this logfile a work unit got successfully transferred and that it is the 109th work unit completed for this particular machine. If there are problems communicating with the server it'll be noted in this file. If you have improper terminations of the core it'll also be noted. There are also files called "FAHlog-Prev.txt" that may be generated. It's simply a previous logfile that you can look at if you want to go back further in time. I hope this answers your questions.

    Thank You Kingfish.
I did my own test, for example, I ran Ad-Aware earlier and whilst looking in Task Manager FAH was working like you said. It was sharing the process or whatever with Ad-Aware.

Here is my FAHlog.txt, could you look at it and tell me if its correct please. I also have something called FAHlog2.txt - whats that?

How long does it take to complete a WU coz its been a week since i've been folding but still havnt completed, I don't think.

Do you run your system 24/7 or do you shut it off at night?
  • edited October 2004
When your logfile (fahlog.txt) becomes 50k in size, the next time you reboot it changes the name to fahlog-prev.txt and begins a new log, which will be named fahlog.txt. I'm not sure about fahlog2.txt but from what I've read in other forums it's always 0kb in size so I would just disregard it. It doesn't appear to have any function. You are currently folding a tinker work unit. They generally have 400 frames and can take quite a while to fold. You are at step 250 or so right now. Hang in there and you'll reach the 400. Continue to monitor fahlog.txt and unitinfo.txt for the progress if you wish. You are currently folding a protein worth 241 points, which is quite sizeable and will take a long time to complete. Of course if you have your computer running 24/7 you'll get there faster.

Here's a url to look at the different proteins that you will encounter:

Sorry Kwitko for taking so long to reply. umm, the computer gets shutdown every night, if I could keep it on 24/7 I probably would but since this is a home computer i'm not allowed. 1 of my family members keep 2 of their computers on 24/7 -THEY DON'T FOLD AND I'M SURE THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF F@H.
My computer has 4 accounts (including mine) could I setup F@H on the other acounts?

Thanks again for that :). I'l stick with it, hopefully not long

How do I get the TEAM93 logo and the thing with info in my Sig?

I don't really understand the FAHlog.txt, its all complicated to me so what are the main bits that I need to look at?

Trogan, take a look at this thread - http://short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22330
It looks like the same problem. Server 112 was down for a week, it's back up now though.

According to the portion of the logfile you posted,:

    Begin Copy

    Launch directory: C:\Program Files\F@H
    Service: C:\Program Files\F@H\FAH502-Console.exe
    Arguments: -svcstart

    Launched as a service.
Entered C:\Program Files\F@H to do work.

    End Copy

you have F@H started as a service so no matter what account you are logged in as F@H will continue to run. F@H will even run with this setup while waiting for a login. It's the recommended way to go.

Thanks bothered, though I don't think that I have a problem. At first I thought I did but with Kingfish's explainations I assume everything is working right.

Will I get the Team83 logo when I complete a WU? Where abouts in the FAHlog.txt do I look at how many WU's i've completed coz' I can't see it anywhere?

    Thanks

Check the stats at Stanford for your name. If it's there, then you can make yourself a sig!

According to Stanford's web site, you have already completed one work unit. (Your own user page is here if you wish to view it. Now that you have successfully completed and sent in a work unit you can customize your Folding@Home sig here. Just find your name in the drop-down menu and customizze everything else to your liking. At the bottom it will give a preview of your sig AND the code to insert into your sig for the picture to show.

    EDIT:
Wow two people posted while I was still looking up those two pages! Good job guys, you're pretty quick! ;D

Your project 1131 is a 241 point project. It has 400 frames to it, and you are doing it at about 10 frames per running (Folding active) hour. Folding has allowed 46 days for preferred days (when they'd LIKE to see it back, at max) for this WU, and up to 68 days for points credit(after you box has worked on it for 68 days, it can still be turned in and the results used probably, but no points will be given), from time it was sent out. Your box, if it folded about 40 hours straight, would have it complete. Figuring half time, 12 hours a day folding, 3.3-3.7 half-time days (depending on how busy your computer is when it is on compared to how busy it was when the log was written) to complete from starting point at 0 frames done .

Note the frame number, 266 in parentheses next to the last frame completed entry. 266/400 works out to about 2/3 done, with 1/3 of WU yet to go as of about 2:31 ZULU\GMT time (client tracks time as UTC\GMT\Zulu, 24 time as in Greenwich Mean Time zone, in Greenwich England). Since you are in London area, your local time is likely to be within one-two hours of the Greenwich Mean Time shown by the client. Oh, if it is supposed to be Grenwich Mean Time, excuse me, I'm from the US and keep forgetting which way is right.

Now, if you want info about the WU itself as to points, etc, Folding@Home's website has a project summary page, it is here:

    http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

As far as the certificate showing you folded a WU, you could print it if you want, frame it if you want, it is to folding waht the first pound note a new business takes in is, it proves you started and completed a WU. If you think it is real neat, show the Certificate to folks and friends if you want, too. If you don't think it is cool enough to print, your choice, but it does print up DECENT.

As far as having the Team logo itself, I'll let primesuspect, shorty, or MediaMan decide, but it might be nice to have a Team logo usable on personal websites of our folders that links to team area here at Short-Media. I'll bet the logo is copyrighted, right, admins??? But, if permission were given to use it to show off which team a site owner folds for (with link code to the Short Media folding team area subindex so that if is clicked on the clicker gets the Short Media Team info area on main page), that might result in some of that person's friends folding for the same team.... :D

Glad to be of help. Always a bit hard to know what to do, where to go, etc.

The certificate are a personal reward, for the sake of calling it anything. You can pick up a certificate for points and/or WU's done, just by printing it out.

Go to this link, scroll all the way to the top and enter your folding name in the "personalise" section and click "personalise". The page that comes up is different in the way that it shows people you will catch in green above you and the ones in red below, will catch you in however many days.

    http://www.foldingatwork.com/team.jsp?teamID=93

The EOC link has a lot of links on the left top of the page. Play around by clicking on some of them to see where it takes you. Lots of interesting info. :)

post your client.cfg ...the client should be set to idle. If it is set to low priority it may cause slow downs of certain processes.
