I think you're missing the point. Having 8 RAM slots gives people more options than 4 does, especially when, as far as I can tell, you need at least 4 sticks to run the system in dual channel mode (at least to avoid the performance hit that comes from one cpu going through the other to get to the RAM...) It's all about flexibility, and having 8 RAM slots dramatically increases it.

What options are you talking about?

The ideal setup for this board is 4 x 512 = 2G DC, good OC'ing potential and more than enough memory for most people.
If you need more in the future you go 4 x 1G = 4G DC but who really needs 4GB of memory? unless you forget OC'ing and use this board for its intended purpose: graphics workstation.

Too bad it only has one regular PCI slot (and it's not even a 64 bit slot), that one slot is in an exceptionally bad position, the power connector placement sucks and it takes EPS PSes instead of ATX PSes. It's also a pity that it only has 4 RAM slots. I think I'll stick with the Iwill DK8ES.
All of the new NF4 mobos use 24pin PSUs. I think it's the new standard.

Also even PCIe 1x has more bandwidth than a 64bit PCI-X slot. Time to upgrade those old HD Controller/IO cards ;D

No SLI but it has the option to have 80 Express lanes with 3 2050 chips.

    re: thrax

you cant put a buffering chip on board, just doesn't work like that. thanks equito for pointing that out.

I use those fun fun serial ports too, great for communicating with microcontrollers via a max232.

I wish they'd lose the codec audio, but otherwise a sound board. I acknowledge I'm the last man alive that still uses COM ports.

    Whatsa COM port? ;D

I use mine to program my Basic Stamp II microcontroller, run my M68HC05J1A microcontroller in-circuit simulator and programmer, talk with my Texas Instruments TI-link cable (for my TI-83+, TI-85, and TI-89), update the firmware on old network hardware and new home theater equipment, drive my old serial plotter, and talk to just about any serial equipment I come across.

Bottom line is: as fast as USB is, not everything is USB yet.

That's because they opted to go with four RAM slots instead of eight, permitting the ATX over eATX. Kudos to them, I say.

Let me say from personal experience once removed. Sometimes 8 DIMMS sucks.

Wouldn't we all love to see if that board has the OC Bios that ABIT is known for.

Rumor has it that Abit discontinued production and sales of ALL server and workstation boards... :shakehead
Evidence of it is the fact that ALL links to server and workstations products no longer exist.

As a consequence the WN-2S+ will most likely never see the light of day. :(

Sucks, doesn't it? that board had a lot of potential.

Don't be surprised if we see them go under. An inside source told me that they almost filed for BK 2 months ago.

Is this all cause of bad caps or something?
I can't imagine no softmenu III ...no abit???
Man just as soon tell me there's no easter bunny ...
Stop Equito you're freaking me out. :bawling:

IMO, this is the result of the "obscure" financial offshore dealings they're accused and being investigated of.
Let's face it, Abit hasn't been the same company for quite sometime.

Man, with three of the greatest motherboards in the history of enthusiast computing, I'd hate to see Abit go :(

    BP6, KT7A, NF7, we do love thee :(

Personally, I think the BH6 was the greatest board they ever made but that's another thread all together... :D

Come on! The BP6 is STILL AROUND, and inspiring total madness to this day! ;D

No doubt it's an excellent board but the OC'ing madness started with the BH6 and that's why it's my all time favorite.

true, true. Okay, I add the BH6 to my list. ;)

but come on man, dual CELERON 300s? WTF were people thinking? ;D
  • EQuitoEQuito SoCal, USA

ok now we totally agree...

    and btw, I still have my super duper Celeron 300A 66MHz which runs @ 504MHz (112 x 4.5 @ 2v), that's double the original FSB... :eek2:

Can you imagine if I could double my A64's FSB like that? :smokin:

That is a $700 board. $500 if you don't want SCSI.

I'm hoping MSI updates their Dual Opteron Mobo

The loss of people has hurt Abit.

But look at what has happened at DFI in the last 18 months.

    Things change, live with it.

This mobo also looks real interesting too. I ran across this pic in a thread at the Abit forums. Here's the pic.
