edited July 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
About 5 months ago, a pop up came up saying RPC doom virus was detected........ then like 3 months later my cd drive got deleted (i think this is a virus or a trojan) if i go to my computer i dont even have a cd drive (which is bad because i cant install programs to help my computer, or use my xp installtion disk for if i was to boot the hardrive). And today i just shut down my computer, then i turned it back on. Logged into my desktop name, and the pop up saying Dr Watson Postmortem debugger has encontered a problem and needs to close. so i immediatly searched google and found this forum. do you know any way to possibly fix this (trojan or virus)?

o yea and my Nortan antivirus live update wont work either.it came up like 20 times telling me it detected a trojan and deleted it.I also get the symantec email proxy every time i log on. but something is definently wronge with my computer. and right now im not sure what is going on. my comp is always fast, its pentium 4. but right now it feels like a pentium 1 with over 1,0000000000 spyware. but i delete my spyware. so something is definently not right. alot of times ill be on my computer and it will say windows incontered a problem and needs to close. and everything i had up automaticllay automatically closes.

im am curenntly doing the panda online scan and so far i have 50 infected files and its only half way done. ill post the results when its done. can anyone please help me ?

We also need to get a look at what's running on your computer in order to help you. Please follow the directions at this link to download a tool called Hijackthis and post a log along with the report from Panda.

No, you don't need to rerun the virus scan. I see a few things in your log that we can easily fix for you.

Run Hijackthis. Click on "Open the Misc Tools section". Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file. Place the content of that file here in your in your next post.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE

    Then delete this directory:

    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Nothing wrong with being a noob. We all have to start somewhere, right? :)

To get into safe mode, reboot your computer (or start from off status), and hit F8 repeatedly. You will get a DOS menu that has about 10 different options. Simply select "Safe Mode". To get out of safe mode, merely reboot and your computer will automatically go into full Windows mode.

thanks alot. lol yea i guess we all have to start somewhere. see the problem with me is im only 15, and im smarter than my dad at computers. and this is the famillys computer (he baught it) but he wont fix it so i decided i would do it. But i have to wait until tomorrow because my dad will be at work and hed freak if he seen me in safe mode. So just wondering, what exactly does safe mode look like? is it like BIOS or whaterever, black with white text. or does it look normal? its not really that important but just curious?

It's nothing to worry about. In safe mode you will see your desktop just like in normal mode. The big difference is that the screen dimensions and colors will be off. And you won't be able to access the internet while in safe mode.

You can try to delete that folder in regular mode. It might work in regular mode. If not, you'll have to boot into Safe mode.

cool, thanx alot, ill do thay first thing tomorrow because i cant wait to get my computer working normal. than ill post a new log. The thing im worried about now is getting my cd and dvd drives back. even if my computer gets clean, how will i get my cd drive back when it wont read the instilation cd for the cd driver? (if i go to my computer all i have is a removable disc and a floppy disc, and my comp tells me i have no cd or dvd drive hardware.) My freinds told me if i take apart my "tower" and unplug the cd and dvd drives and then plug them back in and turn on my computer it should reconzie. But id rather take your guys advice. because you guys definently know more about viruses and stuff than anyone els i know. everyone els just told me to reformate my hardrive, and i dont want to do that unless i absolutely have to.

Yes, you want to delete that folder.

Your log looks clean to me now. You have a lot running at startup that is unnecessary and hogging a lot of resources of your computer. These are optional fixes that you can make with Hijackthis to eliminate some of the programs from running at startup.

You can safely fix any of those lines with Hijackthis. But you should look over all of those programs because you may decide you want one of them to start every time you reboot. That's why they are optional. If you decide to fix them all you will notice that your computer restarts much faster and runs better too.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> System. Now click on the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. Do you see DVD/CD-ROM drives listed? If so, double click on the drive you are having problems with. Make sure that the device is enabled down at the bottom of the window that opens. If it is already enabled go to the Driver tab and click on the Uninstall button. Ok your way back out and reboot your computer. If your CD drive is connected properly Windows XP will recognize it on reboot and reinstall a new driver.

You didn't delete the program. You just kept it from starting when your boot up. Just go to Start -> Programs -> Cursor XP

If you want to keep that program loading at startup you can restore it using hijackthis.

yea lol i got the curser working, thanx. i did what you said for the drives. and it found the drives and tryed to install them, but then said "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)". so it told me to click a link for troubleshooting i clicked it and it told me to uninstall the drives again and reinstall them so i did and still got an error code 19.
