    Ahhhhhhh damn. I want to. But it's already tomorrow, and I don't feel like rescuing a system this <strike>late</strike> early ;D

    I added it into mine. Wasnt positive if you replaced the original setting or just added the new one.

    maybe its just late and I'm tired but loading programs seems snappy. Stuff like Nero which seemed to be slow at times pop right up. Not exactly a subjective testbed. I hate people saying "it feels so much faster..."

    Hmm.... I think it's time to do a fresh image of my OS partition...just in case things go awry. Guinea pig? :D

    I'm giving it a try here:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

    I added it along with the existing EnablePrefetcher - 3. If you don't hear from me for a while you'll know I'm busy doing a Repair Install... :p

    I wonder what happens if you set the value to "3"?

    From the MS link:
    Those include the ability to launch apps 15% faster than Windows XP, boot PCs 50% faster, patch systems with 50% fewer reboots, and let firms migrate to Longhorn 75% per cent faster.
    15% ain't bad, but it may not be too obvious in a lot of cases, either.

    Well, I made a fresh image of my operating system partition. I followed the instructions, but....

    HOLY COW! It really works! :D Darn near everything that isn't hardware bound is noticeably faster now! I am not joking. It really works.

    Exactly. My phrase was "noticeably faster". I've no imperical data to back up what I claim, but the system IS snappier now.

    To really give it a test I emptied my prefetch folder (except for Layout.ini). Then I opened and closed about a dozen programs several times each. (Remember, prefetching is only helpful the second time around.)

    I believe I do see a real improvement. Photoshop 7, Nero 6.6, and a host of other programs all seemed snappier. I would like to see if I feel the same about it when I try it again in the morning.

    One other thing to remember: You must have the Task Scheduler service enabled for prefetching to work at all. If you're not noticing any difference, see if you have it set on Automatic.

    Test Number 2 - change EnableSuperfetch = 1 to EnableSuperfetch = 3.

    Volunteers?

    Im going to have to blitz my OS install to really test this (this has been installed for three months+ and has alot of junk on it now).

    Will try this on my freshly built work laptop when I get into work in an hour :D

    Sooo. Did you guys just add it in alongside, or what? Did you delete the old one and replace this?

    Details, O Pigs Of The Guinea! It's your call. Details, or... The Wheel!

    Yes, I realize it's for hamsters. But apparently guinea pigs have no form of excercise. You ever seen a skinny guinea? Didn't think so.

    I dont even have the "prefetcher" key, so I made one and placed both string values in it.

    I just added a new one and left the old one alone.

    Tomorrow I'm going to experiment with different values and combinations. At 2:45am it's a little late to start cussing at the top of my lungs if something goes awry... :vimp:

    There is no prefetecher key. Thats a folder. the key is EnablePrefetcher. Mine is just in 'PrefetchParameters' instead of 'Prefetch.'

    No visible difference on my laptop at all, except maybe outlook. It appeared to open a few seconds faster but that could be my mind because I want this to work or the fact that I also disabled about 6 sevices that need not be running.

    OK I dont get it. Why are people adding new keys? Change the current key to a value of 1. Of course a new OS will not recognize new keys. They are comparing what Longhorn's Key to XP's key. They have different names but still might do the same. Anyone changed the current XP key to 1 yet and not added the Longhorn key?

    In the Inq article it mentions these to keys:

    EnablePrefetcher = 3 and you will notice in windows longhorn
    EnableSuperfetch = 1

    There evidently is no Superfetch key for XP but there is a Prefetcher key in XP. I was asking if anyone changed the prefetcher key to 1 from 3. Adding new keys doesnt mean an OS will recognize them at all so use the current one.

    That would just eliminate Boot Prefetching.

    From MS:
    The following list describes the different possible values for the EnablePrefetcher key. To disable Prefetch, set the Value to 0.

    0 = Disabled
    1 = Application launch prefetching enabled
    2 = Boot prefetching enabled
    3 = Applaunch & Boot enabled
    As far as whether adding a new key will make any difference, I'd have to look up the details but there are several bugfixes where a key is added that would never be there otherwise.

    I tried something I read on the braodband site that was posted a few posts back. I put my prefetch to 12. Something wierd happened, trillian loaded almost instantly after I rebooted a couple times.

    Before I did that though I made the super fetch key with a value of 1. I noticed nothing I could say was real or not. Other than when loading windows it was no faster or slower than normal when getting to the login screen. After that though when I logged in each time it seemed that the background programs I have opened faster than normal such as ATI Tools and my Wireless NIC software was able to open and connect faster each time. That was noticable and I am positive is not just my imagination as it's always been annoying the hell outta me.

    Nothing great happened, and I am surely not getting higher benchmarks in 3D Mark 05. But nothing lower either thankfully.

    2cpu.com has a poster that uses JEH as his handle. He has co-authored books about XP and has written device drivers etc.. for XP. Beyond what he knows he has inside sources with MS that are core team members involved with XP development and support.

    For accessible XP kernel resources on the web that I know of... He is one of the very best. Easily top three in the world as far as who you can actually contact.

    He says the kernel does not see this key. I believe him. I started this thread before asking him and wished I had waited. JEH is one of the top two or three XP resources available in the world on forums or email.

    It is sorta funny how so many saw a serious improvement based on "seat of the pants" benchmarks. I also "thought" I saw something. So yes I too am guilty as charged.

    Sort of like how I maintain that IDE raid-0 real life results are not worth the risk except for specialized situations. But many swear "it feels so much faster!"

    Well, no matter how smart or educated any of us may be, we are all subject to the 'placebo affect'. Tex, I still maintain that Windows Explorer and other XP things open faster now. ;D No, I still have no empirical data to back that up. Maybe it's just in my head, but it's faster darnit! :mad:

    :p
