Almost all the new 7200RPM IDE hard drives have an 8MB cache. Some of the Maxtors have a 16MB cache. The cache is essentially a small memory chip that stores data for the hard drive when the drive gets bogged down with too much new data entering to be written. The cache allows the hard drive's writing process to be smoother and faster. It is a benefit, so make sure the drive you buy has the 8MB cache. Actually, I'm not aware of any desktop 7200 drives that don't have it.
