Opening Toshiba notebook. Step by step guide with pics.

edited June 2009 in Hardware
Ok, guys. I know that it is very hard to find a teardown guide with pictures for a laptop. So, I decided to create it myself. I just started a new website. This web site will help you to disassemble laptops to fix it. Right now I have teardown guides for the following units:
Toshiba Satellite 1415
Toshiba Satellite 1800
Toshiba Satellite 1805
Toshiba Satellite 2435
Toshiba Satellite M35X
Toshiba Satellite A60/A65
Toshiba Satellite A70/A75
Toshiba Satellite P25
Toshiba Tecra A1
Toshiba Tecra TE2100
Toshiba Tecra 9100
Toshiba Portege 4010
Toshiba Tecra S1
Toshiba Satellite A55
Toshiba Satellite M55
Toshiba Tecra A3

Is it useful for you?

More coming. I'll create a guide for any unit I have to repair (not only for Toshibas). Stay tuned.

It's here: How to disassemble Toshiba laptop. Repair notebook yourself.

Interesting, but how about a video guide in addition to the still photos? Like this. It was a teardown and rebuild of a Dell Latitude CPi-A366XT laptop for a motherboard change.

cj, although you said people may not be able to understand you very well due to your accent, you could still make the videos, but not speak. Umm, i cant find the right way of saying that without it being offensive, so please to not take any offence to that. what i mean is just have a tripod holding the video camera and just disassemple it slowly, and point at what your doing. So say your removing a screw. point to it, and then remove it. just a tip i thought might help. good just with the tutorials so far, theyre very clear and easy to understand.

Go ahead and make the videos and speak on them. I don't think a lot of words are needed, it'll be pretty obvious what you're doing.

Just say something only when needed to point out a tip or feature.

Nicely done guides Cj, Personally I like your format. If my laptop is about to be torn open it will be nice to have a printed guide to walk me through it.

whens it's all back together again then I can whatch some streaming video, although it might not be about laptop repair :p

    Hi,
    how r u?
My name is Tahir Khan, I have a a toshiba satellite s2410-304, I bought it in Moscow in 2003, i am currently in Bombay..2 months ago there was a heavy lightning in my area, something happened and my laptop and tv stopped working. I turned my laptop off and on, there was no display, i would only see red TOSHIBA logo and after that just horizontal lines on the LCD.
I took the laptop to a authorised Toshiba center, since it was out of warranty, they said they will charge 60$ (in Rupees) just to diagnose which will take 2-3 days and then if any part is damaged then it will take 2-3 weeks to get it working, same afternoon i came to know that one of my friend was leaving for moscow in that week, so I thought he can get it repaired from moscow. I went back to the toshiba center, and told them I want my laptop back...mysteriously they said that it has been repaired, when I spoke to the technician he said that LCD cable was loose. I had a huge arguement with them on paying 60$ to them and I ended up paying a little less.
When I came back home I discovered that My internet is not working...it was showing network cable unplugged (I have a internal NIC)so I called my Broadband guy, who came with a laptop, which worked fine on the same connection, he concluded that my NIC has gone bad. I bought a USB-NIC adapter and have been using that and my internet is working fine.
Also my video out is not working (earlier I was able to watch movies on my TV through my laptop)

today I thought i would open my laptop and see if anything is unplugged or something so that my NIC starts working,
I followed the guides from ur site (http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba1415/sat1415_1.htm)
    EXCELLENT PICTURES

After opening it half way I mad the following observations:

There are 2 thin wires (black and white) loose under one of the F4 plastic panel. similar to these in the picture (http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba1415/disassembly/big/Toshiba_1415_05.jpg)
    what are these???

What could be the problem with the NIC card/V-output ?

    Please advise?

    Thanks and regards

    Hi Tahir,
It's hard to troubleshoot the laptop over the Internet. If you laptop was damaged my lightning it could be anything. Two wires (black and white) most likely are wireless antennas. They are disconnected because you do not have a wireless card installed.
    Sorry for late response,
    I was busy.

would you be interested in submitted pictures of toshiba openings? so you can archive many more models than what may be avaliable to you?

the reason i ask is because, last night i think i may have popped out a hinge spring that holds my lcd screen up. my model varies slightly from the ones you have posted and i didn't see any way of getting under the speaker cover to see what exactly is going wrong with my left hinge. if you are (or anyone is) fimilar with how i would go about getting to the hinge please let me know, if you'd be interested in pictures of how my a15 is opened etc.. let me know that too

for now ill put off attempting to fix the hinge untill well after the holidays, so plenty of time for any suggestions

    thanks!

I've added a few more pictures and details of my broken hinge.. not anywhere near the quality of cj2600's tear downs. but i work on details after the holidays,

so far ive only ran into 4 different screw type/sizes and i want to edit the pics to mark which size goes where. it's alot more work than i thought. also i want to show how to maintain the a10/15 fan, atleast mine starts to sound like a turbine engine if i dont clean and lube it once every so often.

    Edit: took pics off,removed link.
