k so where should i go if i needed to stop or delete that. o yea, i installed the new avg and it still says "unfinished updates, restart is required" the prob is that i had to restart to uninstall the old one. so if i was to restart now to get the updat my computer wouldnt turn on. and then id have to re install it all again only to get the same message. just dont know what to do.
Re-read this post, get RegCleaner, then click Tools>>>Registry Cleanup>>>Do Them All.
Then (in the main screen) click File>>>Save list as txt
Make a note of where the file is saved, then edit it to remove everything you know is not related to McAfee or Norton and post the list here. I'm recommending that you edit the list for privacy reasons; it's really no one else's business what other software you have on your computer. What I'm hoping to spot are the leftover remnants of the uninstalled McAfee and/or Norton stuff.
Are you turning off Windows Restore before you delete and/or disable stuff? It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Windows trying to stick it right back in there on you. I think it's been mentioned, but some viruses try to disable your Anti-Virus software so they can infect you without interference. Since the companies that make A-V software are aware of this they build things into the program to make it intentionally hard to totally disable or completely uninstall. When I finally pounded a stake through the heart of Norton on my GF's computer last summer I spent the better part of an afternoon manually editing the registry to get rid of it. I've had Norton off my main machine for well over a year now, but just the other day I found leftover pieces of WinFax (part of Norton System Works) still lurking in my registry.
The point I'm trying to make is that your problems could well be caused by Windows trying to run a program which is no longer all there. The task now is to make sure that all the old stuff is completely gone, and that nothing rotten (SVT type stuff) has snuck in there in the meantime.
ok i tryed to uninstall mcaffe but it kept freezing. i also did the reg cleaner like profdlp told me to. i deleted everything (in this saved text) that doesnt have to do with mcaffe EXCEPT. i found stuff. like MOODLOGIC which was suposably a virus which i deleted in safe mode. i also found VEIWPOINT stuff. which was a virus that i thought i deleted (buckeye sam from this forum helped me with that one). i found "MyWebSearch, SearchAssistant and Fun Web Products, ScreenSaver, New
FunWebProducts, Settings," all those to me sound bad.
Also i found these (S3r521, Qdtwt33tb258xcst2826, New
Schlumberger, Smart Cards And Terminals, New) didnt know what they were.
i left incredimail there to because i uninstalled that along time ago and it didnt go away obviously.
THERE MAY BE A FEW OTHER ON THE LIST THAT I DIDNT MENTION BECAUSE THEY WERE BAD LOOKING TO ME.

What it's telling you is that there is stuff in the registry referring to those programs.
In RegCleaner you can right-click on an item to see advanced info. If it's a program you're sure "ought" to be clear gone, select the item and remove it. Make sure you know where your backups are, just in case.
i swear im such an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhh im so dumb. i forgot to make a back up. and i was only deleting incredimail because i know i dont need it but underneath incredimail was install sheild. and uhhh i think i dleted it . im an f'n idiot i swear

If you are unsure about what an item is, simply do an Internet search. 99% of time, it's catalogued somewhere and the explanation will be clear.
k i got install sheild back LOL good thing. alright i found a bunch of symantec nortan stuff. dleted them. im still looking for stuff. umm if i know 100% for sure. that i dont need it. should i delete the back up.
ok so far i have restarted my computer twice with no errors at all. i have sucsessfully uninstalled AVG but when i installed the newest verison again it said "unfinished updates, restart is required" im starting to wonder if ill ever even get avg to work :shakehead any ideas?
AVG had a second major program update last night. I had to run their update tool several times to finish things off. Once you get to the point where it tells you that there are no more updates available you ought to run a full system scan.
well mine doesnt update at all. after it said "unfinisehed update, u must restart" i restarted , computer turned on NORMAL. when brought up avg it still said the same message about restarting. if i close that box and go check for updates it says "update was un-sucssesfull"

"unfinisehed update, u must restart"
I assume that's a rough paraphrase, right? Either that, or you computer is drunk and voila, we've found the problem.
no thats not exactly what it says i just summed it down. it actually said "unfinished update of AVG free edition has been detected. To finish the update process, it is necessary to restart the computer. do you want to restart now? " and ive clicked yes the computer restarts, then i go to avg and it says it again.
Click Start>>>Run and type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and make sure there isn't something referring to an AVG Update (not the program itself) stuck in there.
The next step I'd recommend would be to print this out and do the following:
1) Download AVG's latest version
2) Physically disconnect from the Internet (as in pull the Network or Modem plug)
3) Uninstall AVG completely (In Safe Mode, preferably)
4) Reboot
5) Reinstall AVG
6) Reboot and see if the error persists (Ignore any errors regarding not being able to connect to the Internet for updates - you've still got the plug pulled, right?)
7) Plug your cable back in and go for a normal boot with the Internet reconnected and hope the updates don't give you any grief this time.
The fact that your other boot errors went away after running RegClean leads me to suspect that leftover McAfee/Norton/Whatever stuff was causing problems with getting a clean installation of AVG. Starting from scratch will hopefully take care of things.

Both McAfee and Norton AVs can act themselves like viruses. Ick. I try to have nothing to do with either of them any more. :shakehead
Well profdlp i did what u said and good news .......... it worked. . looks like my problem is fixed. hopefully it doesnt come back this time. thanks alot Trogan_1000, profdlp and Leonardo. got another error on my computer but thats with my cd/dvd drive not reading anything. so thats posted in the hardware forum. thanx alot guys.
Man im sorry if im bothering u guys with much questions. but like i said my cd/dvd drive isnt working. i tried to uninstall the software that it came with. i go to add remove program click remove. it sayd loading install sheild wizard. and then nothing happens. is there another way for me to get rid of it so i can reinstall it? cuz im thinking that if i reinstall the software that it might work. because windoes DOES reconize the driver.

Don't worry about "bothering" us - you aren't! How do you think we've learned what we know? Hmm, probalby just like you are.
Yes, zap both of those tool/search bars. Kill 'em dead!

Reboot your computer and then install AVG only. See what happens after.
