Got me a Thorton!

Gotta love Amd cpu´s. I modded it straight away without even testing it. Popped it straight up to 2 gigs with default volts, 1.568.

That´s not the big deal here though. The core is a Barton, no doubt. And just by closing the 2:nd pair of the L2 bridge gave me this:

That´s right folks, the cpu is a measely $50 and is a bloody Barton.

    Yessir!

Look for XP2000, week 31 and newer.
    AXDC2000DUT3C 9745037240299
    AQXEA0324XPMW is the full stepping.

Probably not a good clocker but that´s not the point here. It´s a bloody cheap Barton.

This probably mean that the last Tbred and Duron is produced and that Amd only have to concentate on 3 cores for the single cpu market. XP and Barton (same core), Athlon 64 and the FX chips. A lot cheaper manufacturing.

If you look for a good clocker, try to get a "Y" where mine says "9" and as low batchnumber as possible. Mine says 299 in the end of the first row. Below 50 is VERY good but hard to get.

I suspect that XP2200 and XP2400 will have lower batchnumbers but we will see. Mine is at least Folding stable @ 2 gigs and just under 1.57 vcore. Still testing it though.

So what online retailers have them? I may just have to get one!

So, mod the Thorton back into a full-sized Barton and then mod it to be an MP. $100 gives you both procs for a dual rig capable of probably 2GHz or better. Sweet.

Now, let's just hope that L2 is good and was just turned off to get some Thortons out the door and not turned off because it really was bad.

Kaching! Well, another site "discovered" it but i haven´t seen anyone else confirm it.

No idea in the states. They are here in E though but i would suggest the good old "Eggs" since i strongly doubt that they have XP2000 palo´s or Tbred A´s left. XP2000 where never made on Tbred B i think.

2 gigs at 1.58 volts isn´t that bad. Havent even tried it higher yet. I´m using an Amd retail sink/fan for a XP1700 and things are a little hot. Especially with bios 10. This is a 2.5 gigs+ cpu, that´s for sure.

    Mackanz,
did that have a pit to fill, or did you just go right for conductive paint?
  • TheLostSwedeTheLostSwede Trondheim, Norway Icrontian
    edited October 2003
Radeon, the good thing about it is that it uses the old packaging which makes it easier to paint. But yes, you have to fill the pit with something and then paint it with rear defogger silver. It´s only one bridge so it´s easy. Dont glue the contacts though. It´s a biatch to get rid of.

    I use white-out. :D

ok, thanks...just curious if i would need my superglue again like my old XP.
  • TheLostSwedeTheLostSwede Trondheim, Norway Icrontian
    edited October 2003
I used superglue as usual. Tejp around the bridge first so that the glue only goes down into the pit. Let it dry for 5 minutes, scrape it off with an exacto/razorblade, paint the bridge.

White-out or Tippex as it is called here works very good as well. Dont have any at home though so glue had to do.

have you had any instability, i.e. maybe the extra 256kB are bad, which is why they are disabled? Also, has anyone found where to order these chips online?
  • TheLostSwedeTheLostSwede Trondheim, Norway Icrontian

No instabilitys at all. Folding 24/7 @ 2 gigs on default voltage.

    Gargoyle,

If i where you, i would spend 10 bucks more and buy it in a store where you can see the steppings. Thats how i found mine. You can also take a chance and buy a XP 2000 from the eggs. I think you have a great chance getting one actually.

Yeah, I'll need to check out the stores then. Newegg lists their 2000+'s as T-breds at the moment.

That should be the one. As far as i know, 2000 where never made on the tbred core. Even if it is a thorton, it will be listed as a tbred cause that is what AMD wants. Out of the box, it´s just a tbred but with a Barton core.

Hey Mac, if it's a Barton core there must be a way to make it 333Mhz, do you know how?

I'm trying to decide if I should get this one (found by GHoosdum) or the new 1.6GHz Duron capable of great results

I'm not too crazy about the 64K L2 cache on that Duron... and with 512K on the Thorton, well...
  • EQuitoEQuito SoCal, USA
    edited November 2003
The cache can be fixed by closing the same L2
  • GHoosdumGHoosdum Icrontian

Ah... so you get 256 out of the Duron, then, correct?
  • EQuitoEQuito SoCal, USA

Correct! for $45 and the L2 mod you get a TBred
