I know! that's why I ordered one from NewEgg but I got a MIRGA instead, TWICE! :banghead:

Thanks to you :respect:, I feel confident ordering it from eWiz because they list the correct stepping but I'm debating if I should spend the extra $20 and get the Thorton.

If the Thorton can be modded to 333MHz, I think I'll go that way...

    what would outperform the other...
    a 2500+
    or the 2000+ thorton

    The Barton should win:

    Barton = 1.83GHz/512K/333MHz $90+

    Thorton = 1.67GHz/256K/266MHz $67+

Modified Thorton (if possible) = 1.67GHz/512K/333MHz

    Modified Duron = 1.6GHz/256K/266MHz $45+

I think I like the idea of the 512 L-2 and would spend the extra.

it looks like ewiz.com gets decent marks from resellerratings.com. :thumbup :thumbup

Mac's got his running at 2GHz (10x200, or 400FSB) at stock voltage!so I have not much doubt the 2000+ Thorton can reach 333FSB without a hiccup... it is just an intentionally crippled Barton after all!

A Thorton modded to 512 kb cache at 2500+ speeds is as fast as....a 2500+ off course. They are the same cpu from the beginning. I will test it further this week now that i have my wc rig up and running. I think it will do 2.3-2.4 with ease.

No doubt that when OC'ed the Thorton could be fast as a Barton but if not OC'ed (WuGgaRoO's question) the 200MHz difference would make the Barton faster, don't you think?

Did you read my first post? is there a way to make it 333MHz? not that it matters because it should do 400MHz easily but just out of curiosity...

I decided to order the 2400+ ($82) after all. I figured it was $10 cheaper than a 2500+ Barton but 170MHz faster so by enabling the extra cache plus a litle OC of only 200MHz (to 2.2GHz) it'll be like having a 3200+ 400MHz Barton which costs $320+

Is it just me, or do the new thorton/bartons not do all that much better than the old JIUHB DLT3Cs? I mean, 2.5GHz is impressive, especially out of a 1.4-1.6GHz chip, but my JIUHB DLT3C 1800 does 2.51GHz too...

    I know what you mean...
I never understood why people buy Bartons when they can get the same OC (or more depending on the cooling) out of a much cheaper CPU.
Also, the well known problem of running 333MHz on an old board and having to mod the chip down to 266MHz to make it work properly...

My friend has one of these thortons I could get off him, any idea of the o/c that I could get out of it?
It had a pinkish core and this stepping (I didnt write down the complete stepping for some reason)

    EQuito,

All my cpu's are made 333 since i have 2 pins closed at the back of the mainboard. So, yes , the good old L12 mod should do allright or if you pin-mod it.

When the guys over at Xtreme were talking about the new Durons from NewEgg I ordered one and got a MIRGA, twice!

Then I see you guys talking about the Thortons so I orderd one and guess what? it's freaking locked... :banghead:

    Equito,

If you want, i can send you my Thorton as it's not in use.
It's like the 100th time you get unlucky. Is there a local shop around so that you can check the cpu out first?

The board cannot unlock these chips.
Looks like the newer Bartons and now Thortons are being locked from factory starting from week 39.

Thanks! but don't worry, it's not a big deal. ;)
I'll just use it at default, all I wanted was to play with a KV7 I have here and set another folding rig.
It would've been nice to OC the hell out of it but it didn't work out...
I do have local shops like Fry's or PC Club but they charge way more that e-shops.

    Cheers!

Equito, www.plycon.com has a "speedstrip" that should unlock it.

    What exactly IS a speedstrip?

Can't Bartons be unlocked with some properly placed defogger repair?

    Speedstrip ^

And no, the new bartons cannot be unlocked with conductive ink anymore. The new package has epoxy over the entire thing, except the core itself. You have to scrape that off to be able to unlock it, but scraping it off is a real good way to destroy the chip, too.

Why are they locking/protecting the bridges all of a sudden? Didnt AMD practically come out and say they supported the enthusiast/overclocking market?

Thanks! that's a good idea except that nobody knows which pins to connect on these new Barton's/Thorton's (see thread at Xtreme forums). The bridges look connected so speculation is that AMD is using a different method this time around.

Also, I don't think they're doing this to stop re-marked chips but rather to force customers to buy more expensive chips if they want more speed. We had a good run for a long time so I don't blame them...

Hmm. Well, the worst that could happen is that you'd kill the CPU (hint: ALWAYS buy retail CPUs if you intend to futz with them) and you'd be out $15 for the speedstrip.

I think it's worth a try, personally, but then I'd just RMA the chip if I killed it too, so...

I've read that page before, but it doesn't say what it actually IS.

I mean, when you open the box, what are you looking at? The way they describe what the product does without telling you how it does it or what the product looks like disturbs me.

Get a Thorton earlier than a week 33 or so locally so you can see the cpu. That's the only chance.

Does a gallon of milk tell what it does on the box?
