New monitor purchase

Hey guys.

Merkor has this kicka$$ deal on a 21" NEC with .28 dot pitch (Grade A too). I need another monitor, and I wanted a LCD, but screw it, I'm not paying 3 times the amount if I can get a 21 for that cheap.

My question being, will I notice anything with that .28 dot pitch? I have a .25 right now with my 21 Dell. Are there any perf issues with the .28? Thanks guys

The only thing to keep in mind is that the coarser the dot pitch, the less sharp the image will be, especially at higher resolutions.

    Hmmm, such evil things.

I may just buy a new 19" for 180. better max res and refresh, and I'm not gambling.

    edit// I picked up a 19" Phillips. 1920x1440 max, .25 dp 91hz. 180 bucks.

A big monitor isn't really all that great, it hurts you eyes more over time. I myself prefer a smaller monitor because there isn't much need to run at a resolution over 1024x768 now that you can use FSAA and AA in games to get a better picture rather than just upping the resolution. I use a 15in viewable (i think) and it is just great, it is about 10 years old and has a very very nice picture and refresh rate. If i get another monitor i think i'll get a 17in viewable though.

I have a 21 currently that I love, doesn't bother me a bit, but who knows, we'll see when I get older :)

I don't know how this new 19 will be though, we'll see in about an hour apparently.

    Gobd... 1024x768?

    EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW! *ack* *gag* *cough*

I can't stand anything less than 1280x1024, and that's only bearable. 1600x1200 is the bare minimum for adequate resolution in 2d stuff. Games are another matter, but unless you swap monitors between 2d and 3d stuff...

    1600 x 1200, and no smaller than 19". I refuse anything else.

(LAN monitors nonwithstanding. I'm buying a 17"/1280x1024 LCD for LANning.)

Yeah, 1600x1200 is my fav. Wish I hadn't bought this 19" Phillips though, it doesn't like the 1600x1200 for some reason, and I have to adjust to get it right. Looks like crap in windows too:shakehead :shakehead

Looks fine in games though, runs fine in 1600x1200 for C&C, just sucks in windows... o well.

I prefer no less than 19" in a CRT, 17" in a LCD. I keep it at 1280x960, and no less than 1024x678, 800x600 is too small nowadays

    An observation:

If you want big, but don't want to break the bank, go with a flat CRT. You get the benefits of less distortion, big screen, great colors - beats the heck out of an LCD. But yes, it is big and bulky.

I haven't even looked at monitors lately. What percentage of new CRTs are now flat screen?

I know I love my flatscreen Hitachi CM823F. TRUE flat screen, no convex/concave, no tapered flat. Ruler, edge to edge, 100% touching flat. Freaking rocks. 21", 1600x1200@90Hz. God I love this thing.

I love my Dell UltraScan P1110 21" Trinitron.

When it comes to CRT's, only 19" or larger will do. They MUST have a Trinitron/Diamondtron tube, or at the very least, utilize Aperture Grille technology. Down with Shadow Mask!

I won't purchase an LCD simply because of the ghosting problems they all have due to their design.

    ViewSonic's P225FB 22" CRT is absolutely stunning. 2048x1536 @ 79 Hz, 1600x1200 @ 100 Hz, 0.24mm Aperture Grille, perfectly flat (90* deflection), supports both 15-pin mini D-Sub monitor cable or 5-cable BNC connectors and weighs 80 lbs. :)

Simguy, that ViewSonic monitor sucks! It can only do 2048x1536 at 79Hz! My Sony G520 does it at 85! ;D;D

From now on I stick to 21" trinitron. I broke my own rule by going with something other than Sony, and I will never do it again.

I love my 15.4 in WUXGA Ultrasharp LCD, does 1920x1200 (at 60 Hz of course) but there's no problem at all with ghosting and I've played everything from UT2k3 to HL on it with no ghosting issues.

For my CRT i've got one of the old 19" Trinitron's doing 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz (iirc). I'd use it more but the LCD is just so much nicer ... and it has a computer attached right to it.

Yeah the response times for LCDs are getting to the stage where ghosting isn't a problem. But I've got to agree with 90% of the people in this thread that a good 21" trinitron works pretty darn well ;)

Thrax: Remember, a 17" LCD has a slightly larger viewable area than a 19" monitor, so you won't actually be downgrading to 17".

Heh our Sony 17" Trintron is going down the crapper. If you bump the desk it will go out. Light says its on but you have to turn it off then back on. Plus this thing takes forever to turn on, not like my ViewSonic.
