I am looking for the biggest 2.5" hard-drives I can get (new or second hand) for $20 or less each, must be at least a Gig each though.

You are also thinking of PCMCIA ATA cards rather than Microdrives, Microdrives are Type II compact flash media (but they are actually drives as opposed to solid state ATA CF type 1 cards).

Oh god no (I have been through many discussions and threads about trying to low level format on an external drive)........
It's not possible unless you cant directly interface with the drive, which wont be possible.
