Forget Area 51, see the pit-lane notebook

Acer yesterday celebrated Ferrari's Grand Prix World Championship victory with a bright red special edition notebook bearing the famous prancing pony logo and dubbed the Ferrari 3000.

[blockquote]Acer is one of the Ferrari racing team's official suppliers. AMD is one of the team's sponsors - check out the tiny logo on the tail fin - and the Ferrari 3000 sports a "powerful AMD processor", though Acer didn't say which one.

The notebook also packs in 512MB of DDR SDRAM, a 60GB hard drive and a DVD writer. The 15in screen is backed by an ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 chip. The Ferrari 3000 provides integrated 802.11g wireless networking adaptor, Bluetooth support, and 10/100Mbps Ethernet and 56Kbps modem fixed-line connections. There's a four-in-one memory card reader, USB and 1394 ports, and S-video output, too.

Acer will ship the Ferrari 3000 next month for around $1999.[/blockquote]

Afaik there is no Radeon 9200 mobility, only - Mobility, 9000, 9600 and 9600 Pro.....

Oh, no, there is. Never seen it before though.
Should at least have a 9600 Pro.

Blech. I don't like Ferraris. They sound awful, and a lot of them are hideously ugly. Someone tell me when they introduce a Mercedes-inspired notebook.

And what exactly would a Mercedes-inspired notebook be? Stylish and luxurious, but not quite as fast as the Ferarri Notebook and not quite as nimble as the BMW notebook...

If you continue to compare Apples to (no, not oranges) Mercedes, I'll have to hurt you. :D

At least it looks like something. I have stickers plastered all over my Toshiba so that I can keep an eye on it in airport security.
Maybe I can convince my boss that this is the ticket. nfw.

Leo, I'm not a big fan of that whole mid-engine "rolling doorstop" look in general. And most Ferraris sound perfectly awful. They really do. I think it has something to do with the small displacement combined with the large number of cylinders, because other small high RPM engines (Porsche comes to mind) sound great. I don't mind the front engine/rear drive Ferraris, but I don't like most of the mid-engine ones. I'd much rather have a Corvette, Viper, Mercedes SL, BMW M3 or something else that doesn't look like a cheese wedge on wheels.

I agree with you there, Geeky... but considering your avatar used to be Brain, wouldn't you LIKE a cheese wedge? ;)
