S(L)K-7/800/900 Users: Fan direction?

With your Thermalright SK/SLK series copper heatsinks, how do you have your fan oriented? Blowing ON the sink, or sucking air AWAY from the sink?

I have mine blowing into the HS but haven't even tried the other way. My Alpha PAL 8045 did better sucking and my Swiftech liked it being blown into.

same as mtgoat: SLK-900U gets blown into. PAL8045 gets blown away from.

I've not tested temps to see which is better for the SLK, but Alpha's recommendation is to have fans blow away from the HS.

Tried the 800a both ways. Blowing into the fins is better.

Both SLK900's have 92mm fans blowing down into them. Keeps the overclocked P4 temps nice and low.

I've never tested the SLK900's operation with fans sucking air up instead of blowing down.

    Blow on.

Alright. I have my fan sucking away, a similar orientation needed by the PAL8045..A fan direction I've just kept figuring it was better.

I'll flip it the other way and see how it goes. Thanks guys!

Airflow patterns and localized hotspots in the computer case have as much to do with proper CPU fan orientation as the original intent of the heatsink's designer. If the heatsink is surrounded by hot chips on the motherboard, or if lots of hot air is dissipating close by from the Northbridge or vid card, pulling air out of (instead of pushing it through) the CPU heatsink might result in dragging already heated air through the veins.

With my Alpha 8045, on sys. no. 2 below and a previous system, I had it configured to pull air out of the heatsink. Turning the fan over, to blow air into the heatsink resulted in an instant 4*C reduction in full load temperature. It also greatly reduced noise.

    You just have to experiment.

I'm pretty sure it comes from "hot air rises" (I know that's how I've always thought about it). But most of today's cases have the motherboard laying on its edge so the HSF is perpendicular to the floor, not parallel, therefore the hot air has already risen. Also, placement of components has a good deal to do with cooling too. I don't have the fan blowing away from the HS w/ my SLK because my video card and RAM and Northbirdge and capacitors are all very close to the socket, which would decrease the amount of air that could be pulled. Since I do not have obstuctions above the HS I placed the fan so that it blows into the HS. Of course, I have those same obstuctions once the air comes out of the base, but I do not think it effects airflow as much as it would if the fan were blowing in the opposite direction.

Ha ha, I know what you're talkin' about. ;D

You know, we can study the dynamics of airfow to death, mapping out every detail of the case's internals, painstakingly researching output volumes and flow patterns of fans, but we will NEVER be able to understand all the variables. (Hmm, sounds like a new distributed computing project to me!)

Really, the only way is through experimentation and observation.

I got mine as blowing away from the fans now, I'm going to shut down and switch the fan over to see what the temps look like.

Don't even think about it thrax. You might beat my 3dmark score. In which case, I'd have to buy something faster. Like a 9800 XT or something :D;D

Don't make me do it guys. I really don't want to spend the money... don't make me pull out that credit card, 'cause you'll regret it. I'll buy one of those bitchin' fast 3d accelerator thingys and blow you all away! ;D

I'm vaguely reconsidering that. Although I have a firm source of money now, it's a definitely possibility.

The prospect of modding my case for a Black Ice X2 rad..Is less than pleasant.

If you want something that's pretty quiet, but still has decent performance, a Sunon KD1209PTB2-6 would be fine. SVC has a 60cfm YSTech 92mm that's a bit louder, but also excellent. If you're totally deaf, a 92mm Tornado is the only way to go.

NO TORNADO!!!! I just sold my tornado to a friend ... I don't like mini vaccuums in my computer thx.

Whats the cfm on the sunon?
