I joined Short-Media shortly after my B-day, end of Feb., 2004. And I guess I'm not the only one to discover this place reading about ATi's drivers (3.8 I think it was) and monitors. Looking through the threads a bit, I saw some pretty interesting conversations. I wanted to give my opinion as well, so, here I am! You guys got me into folding, I started about a month ago. I really started maybe 5-7 days ago. (I let my comp finish 1 WU and then stopped 'cause it started interfering with some of my programs.) Now I intend to fold for a long time to come. Who knows, maybe I'll get another rig in on it in the future.
Hello everyone! :usflag:

Well Sir, I only know of one way to keep from having birthdays, and it ain't worth damn!
There is a lot of truth in the saying that old age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthuisiam! Not sure about the spelling there, right now, I am way into the Bud Light.
Preciate the fact that I'm not the only older dude here, and the fact that you admitted to it.
Take care
A BIG Welcome to all of you who have posted here after I posted last. Gunny, Bothered is also of our general age group. As is Leonardo. We have, as the old saying goes, "a mix of old and new" here, and since the focus is tech, it can be true both ways for some of us. (Physical Age versus IIT Experience). Nice thing is, age is not a barrier to IT enthusiasm, and a mix of us can make a very nicely balanced forum work very very well.
Shorty, primesuspect (we keep suspecting him of GOOD here ), and MediaMan are somewhere in the middle of the age range. They as a group of three are the PRIME MOVER's here. But they are tolerant of almost all ages.
TheGr81: Happy to see another enthusiast here, thanks for folding with us.
Hey all! lol i'm sure most of you know me from harassing you (not *literally*, of course my comp just hates me) throughout the forums. but, i'm actually only 15 years old and can't wait to drive. i'd heard about f@h and used it to check my temps but then said screw it. now, after watching Fold Flash 2, all the sudden i realized how insanely awesome this is. so, if i can get my old machine connected, i shall fold forever! lol, but i'd have to work on getting them networked and that costs more money! so i'll just fold like a mofo on here i figured, the least i could do was help out short-media, AND help thousands, then hoorah! lol so thanks once again s-m!
-entr0py (aka: trystan, but my real name sucks so i use fake ones lol)

Welcome to Short Media and welcome to our great Folding@Home Team. We have a very fierce bite for our size - much fun too.
Computer science? Hmm. Great. You've got the theory and the background with your university; with us you get a solid foundation in the practical! Obviously you are now on a path to great success!
My name is Donut (Tom), and I fold under the name Donuts. I'm 38 yrs. old and live in Maine. Started folding couple of months ago for another team, and decided to switch. I've been lurking in your forums for over a year and you folks have already answered many questions for me. (as I am still a complete noob). Thanks for the welcome. :smiles:

No more "you folks", OK? It's us and we - you are part of the Team! Welcome to our community.
Name: Stella
Age: 25
Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Occupation: Student (at least until the end of the year)
Interests: A whole bunch of different stuff, kinda like a quilt.
I've been bribed with cookies by qparadox to join this. This seems like a good idea, but after a recent infestation of spyware, which you guys help me fix, I wasn't too keen on installing stuff onto my computer.
Like qparadox, I'm also an engineer at SFU, though I specialize in electronic engineering.
I just started folding today and am about 13% through my first WU.
I lost my original one in an ill-fated attempt to edit it a while ago, so I finally got around to re-posting something:
Name: Johnathan
Age: 22
Location: University of Oklahoma, Norman
. update: Now in Los Alamos, NM
Occupation: Undergraduate Research Assitant, Center for Spatial Analysis
. update: As of Jan '05, I'm on a one-year appointment at Los Alamos National Laboratory
Joined: During the Before Time, from the 'Long Long Ago'. Back when we were Icrontic, that is.
Interests: Computers, Cars (Toyota and classic Volvo), Women. Listed in descending order of expertise. There's a big drop in expertise between the first two, and even an even bigger one for the last two.
I'm working on my Geography degree, which I'll finish either in December '04 or May '05, depending on what strings I can pull with the scholarship people. The less they pay, the less time I'm sticking around . Before anybody asks: no, I am not planning to become a teacher. I plan on working in the private or public sector working with GIS, remote sensing, or both. Working as an U.R.A., I'm getting lots of experience in GIS, but it gets a little monotonous. Maybe I can find an environmental job that involves a little fieldwork to keep me from getting as bored.
I am the once and future host of Icrontic_11: the sexiest, if not fastest (one of the fastest) folding rigs in our acclaimed, renowned, and overall super-duper-keen SMx folding project. Primesuspect is graciously keeping an eye on it until I'm in a position to give it a nice kooshy home again.
. update: IC_11 is on it's way back home
When I'm not trying to fix my computer, I'm trying to fix my old Volvo. It probably wasn't the best idea to buy the car with financial aid money, but I've got it now and I've got to do something with it.
I also like long walks on the beach and... oh, not that stuff? Okay...
Welcome LilPolarBear. Great you joined the folding team with the nicest people and the biggest dedication. We are a truely worldly team.
Sally and i are from Western Australia, Dancer from Eastern Australia. There are Poms, Canadians, Swede's and folders from other countries all over the globe. There are even a few from the USA, believe it or not, hehehe.
I have been around a couple of weeks now so I thought it only polite to tell you about myself:
Name: Marcus
Age: 33
Location: North Wales
I am the owner of a Computer and consultancy business. We specialise in SME's that need experienced help/advice but perhaps can't afford full time IT staff. We also have a retail outlet aimed at Joe public but have regular "modders" visiting for new toys. (42" Plasma and the Thermaltake Tsunami Case's are the current toys :wow2: )
I have been in IT for soooo long! I started out as a "Mac" engineer looking after a small network at a newspaper. Moved on to managing the pre press department of a printers and then became a contractor/mercenary where I discovered NT3.51 Win3.11 and *86s. (Although I had been a dos fan since my apricot - see below).
Had loads of different roles from domain architect to desktop support. From 20 user environments to 5000 users etc. Loved it all but had enough. Last contract ended about 3 years ago with Nokia after I was offered one of those jobs that you just can't turn down. However turned out to be a nightmare and left a 18 months ago. Sat on my arse for a few months and then started the new consultancy and shop. Things are on the up and looking to employ some more tech heads soon.
I feel like I have written a brief CV/Resume.
I have two beautiful children - Dylan, four and Tilly, 18 months. My wife is a month older than me but looks ten years younger and I am very lucky to have her - she won't read this so I am not being unconventionally British it true she is my "raison d'être" !
So they you have a snapshot of me and my life - nearly forgot - two dogs, an English Springer, Teal and and English Setter, Oakley. (One working, one retired)
I fold because I wanted to do something other than seti with my PC's. That is how I found the is site. Luckily it also has some interesting and resourceful people here. Bonus!
I used to be a mad gamer - but not played a game for 6 months. No time in my grown up world
Nice to see you. The North West UK contingent grows to become a SM hot spot. (I know it's Wales, but you know what I mean.) What part of North Wales? I have spent many a great holiday there.
Hi my name is Kenny, Im a sophmore at Cal State Monterey Bay where I am studying to major in Telecomunications Multimedia and Applied Computing (TMAC). I looking to do something in the Computer Animation field or Computer Science related Job fields. My home town is Victorville California in the High Desert, and I currently live in Monterey Bay where CSUMB is located. I enjoy playing Counter-Strike and the rest of Valves line up, and any other game that you could prob. name off. I play guitar every once in awhile to amuse myself of my lack of skill, and I enjoy listening to Nirvana, Bad Religion, Jack Johnson, PennyWise, and more. I just now started to fold, I see that this is a very intresting approach on widespread research. Thank You.

A hearty welcome to both of you. Squeak, I lived in Monterey for a year while attending the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio. What a lovely place (but oh, so expensive)! I've also lived in the high desert, but in Arizona, just a few miles from Tombstone.
I feel bad that I never noticed this thread before
