Is it genuine failure or stupidity on the part of the consumer?

    Failure.

Stupidity return/exchange rate is a little higher.

Is 11% good or bad for a product return?

It's pretty substantial for a console.

What has been the common problem with the PS3? I know of a few issues but they have only plagued a few consoles to my knowledge.

That's some serious returns... I remember when I worked at Best Buy and they offered a $20 DVD player. We had a 18% return rate. They SUCKED... but for $20, how can you complain. BUT FOR $500!!! :wow2:

Did the PS3 ever appear anything but? :\

Wow I'm glad I desided to get a 360 instead of a Ps3 then. That is unbelievable, over 10% of the $500 consoles broke. Plus only 131, and I thought getting a 360 was hard (early on).

Honestly, its a first generation version of the PS3, future revisions of the PS3 should lower the failure rate.

For $600, I expect it to work right out of the box.
