Case racing

edited October 2003 in Hardware
I had an idea once, taking a case putting it on wheels and stuffing it full of fans on a lead for power applying power to the fans and seeing if it will in fact propel itself.
If you can get them to move the case then lining up 2 of them and having case turbo drag races.

That's so stupid, that is DEFINITELY worth trying. That's a great idea. Better start looking for specials on Comair-Rotron monster fans.

That's awesome. I'd absolutely do something like that!

I remember when I was younger my cousin had a model plane that had a propeller that ran off of a D-cell battery. My brother, my cousin, and I wanted to see if it could move if we put enough batteries together in serial. So we scrounged up about 20 D-cells and taped them together end to end. I don't remember the outcome since I was only about 6 when we did this, but if I remember correctly the plane did indeed move, and then I think the propeller shattered from the centrifugal force. Man, were we stupid back then...

I've removed the fan motor from an old 80mm fan and chucked it into my dremel then spun it up to full (30,000rpm on my dremel) and I have to say that it put enough air out to blow stuff off of my desk from close to 10 feet away...I also chucked thin 60mm fan blades in loosely so that when they'd achieve the full rpm they'd take off under their own power and those baby's can fly!!!

I can only say that BE VERY CAREFUL the fan blades can explode under the brunt of 30,000+ rpm and I'd feel absolutely horrible if someone got injured.
Wear protective eyewear, leather gloves and keep the blade at 90 degrees to your body at all times also keep the dremel at arm's length.
Have fun but for pete's sake please BE CAREFUL!!!!!

This sounds like a good idea for the Lan Party (say about 2:00am, after a few refreshments have been consumed).

Prime - is your insurance up-to-date?
