To this i have two questions...

    1. What new hardware besides a new mobo would u need...? I doubt you'd need new ram or new hd's or anything like that... but i could be wrong. Maybe a new printer?:D

    2. When the 32 bit stuff came out.. it ran the 16 bit software and the like... Why wouldn't the 64 run the 32 and 16 bit s/w... i know we cant be sure.. but i dont see why it wouldn't be backwards compatible...

    thanks
I was mostly thinking HD as that is currently the bottleneck in most current systems. You would need to go SCSI to get the any potential out of it. Maybe a good SCSI RAID controller with 5 or 6 discs. (ZOOM ZOOM)

ure saying we gonna need a new HD to see the increase in speeds?

Well, not entirely, just think of all the times when you Drive is hammering, well they wont improve, but other times when the computer is going slow like encoding stuff or games, will improve.

No not for an increase in speeds. As such the new systems will be faster and multitask much better. There will really be no comparison. But in current systems the overall performance is usually hindered by the HD's that are in them. Any time you need to read or write from the drive the whole system slows down. Loading programs will be faster with SCSI than your current ATA drive. Anything, computers included are only as good as the weakest link. Just imagine if you could put a farm tractor transmission in a race car. How fast do you think it could go? (comparison a little overkill but makes a point) The engine goes fast, revs quite quickly and can pull real hard. But hooked to a slow transmission the car as a whole won't go any faster than a tractor.

    edit:
Watch the HD LED on your 'puter and see how often it lights up.

I'm having the same upgrade delimma. I only upgrade every few years, so I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck.

If I wait for the 64's, I don't see running out a replacing my WinXP Pro with a 64 bit version. I'd wait until the next gen of OS (longhorn?) comes out in 64 bit, and see if it's better. If I'm running a 32 bit OS, will I see any benefits to the 64? Or, should I wait for the 64 to come out, buy a more discounted 3200+ with a dual channel DDR MB, and wait a couple of years until 64 bit is the main stream and everything is tweaked for it.

Does anyone know if the first gen 64 (god why does Commodore 64 pop into my mind everytime I type that!) will run 32 bit applications faster than the 3200+?

The 64s should run 32bit apps faster than 32bit CPUs Mhz for MHz, the whole PR thing was drawn up to compare with the P4.

The AMD64 is completely different to IA64/Itanic, its designed for 32 performance now and excellent compatability, and 64bit for the future.

The 3400+ will be the high end model on launch.

Theres a load of stuff on the AMD64s on the register every day.

Ya know guys, we really should look at what we are doing with our systems before we run off and spend the small fortunes that we do every year. The other day I was visiting my son who has my old Abit KT7 and 800Mhz T.Bird. He plays GTA2 or is it 3? Burns DVD's to VCD, hammers the Internet and does a whole load of other stuff. When I read this thread it got my thinking that that old KT7 and T/Bird would still have done me just fine. I have been around long enough to remember coding a ZX81 and BBC model B, and watching photoshop filters on my Apple Centris 650 take ages to apply the effect, now I don't even see the progress indicator.

So as someone asked on a previous thread, what do you use your computer for? If a games fanatic than I suppose only the best will do, but if your a normal multiuse user, then I doubt if you really do need to upgrade. If you decide to, then start with Linux, your old system will fly.

Thats a good point Warrior. Since the mobo failed in my main rig about 6 weeks ago, and I needed the computer running as it was, I dug out my trusty old KT7R rig with TBird 1.1. After swapping out the drives, I could barely notice that I was on a 1.1GHz machine rather than a 2600+ machine.

Obviously games arent as good and some things take slightly longer, its still a decent machine and perfectly adequate for 70% of what I do. It really makes me wonder if I ever needed the 2 or 3 upgrades since I was running that rig.

At the end of the day though, Im an enthusiast, and I like new hardware. And its the knowlege I gain from messing about with stuff is what pays the bills.

To all of those asking what the others plan to use their next computer for, I have your answer: Half-Life 2.

Haha, j/k, I don't want to turn this thread into another HL2 thread as I know there're plenty of em already floating around on the Internet. Personally, that's what I'm building my next machine for.

Wonder what newegg will debut the A64 3400 at...450 bucks a conservative estimate? And there's still the issue of how much those motherboards are gonna cost.

I hope these drop in prices fairly fast and that motherboards for it will become available as well.

$500 of your american $'s should cover one i recon. and $200 for a motherboard???

its hard to tell at this point in time. as we get nearer the release date they prices that they will be coming out at will be more distinct.
