Intel vs. AMD-- Cray's Opinion....

Cray has been known for supercomputers since a very long time back (as far as electronic computing's perspective goes). They almost started with machines that did computing for what was then NORAD, the big place under a mountain somewhere in Wyoming. They are still around. Now, picture this-- a supercompuer run by Sandia National Labs with 10K of Opertons in it all interconnected with a Cray custom interconnect. This deal is a sale, and the OSDN DevChannel newsletter has this to say about it:
Cray preps new Opteron-based product line
Cray has given AMD's Opteron chip a big vote of confidence, saying it will roll out a new line of supercomputers based around the product. In 2004, Cray will begin selling systems with anywhere from 64 to more than 10,000 Opteron processors. All of the supercomputer-style systems will have a custom interconnect developed by Cray to deliver the kind of internal bandwidth needed for complex technical computing tasks. The decision to roll out the Opteron-based product line follows a deal Cray won last year to create a 10,000-plus processor system for Sandia National Labs. "These products won't be for everyone, but we think there are a decent number of customers out there," said Steve Conway, a spokesman at Cray.

Folks who are touting Intel over AMD might have a big fight on their hands with the Opteron line, as the 4-Ways are out and about NOW. Monarch Computer Systems is offering 4-Way Opteron servers NOW.

I am drooling over all that computing power, not that I can afford it.
