3DMark03 Build 340 ATi v. nVidia

CAGCAG Boca Raton, Florida
edited December 2003 in Hardware
This patch is designed to allow different make graphics cards to be compared on an equal basis and to prevent driver "cheating". Read about it here http://www.nordichardware.com/article/2003/3DMark03_340/

You gotta give nVidia high marks for consistency. Everytime they shoot, they invariably hit their feet.

can't tell if this is good or not but at least I'll have a benchmark for later reference.

All Futuremark did was to disable the compilers in Nvidia's forceware drivers...oddly enough they left ATI's compilers alone.
    I ran it and I lost maybe 500 points...bfd.
    Compare for yourselves

what aperture size do you run the v9950ultra at madmat?
  • edited November 2003
    In bios? I run a 128meg aperature.

have you tried 64 or even 32? if not do so you might be surprised.
  • edited November 2003
Thanks, I'll give it a shot...I've actually considered it but never done it.
I remember a friend of mine picking up a considerable boost after setting his old TI4400 to a 32mb aperature.

Well all I can say is this ...I firmly believe that the more video mem you have the lower your aperture size needs to be ...too little is not good and too much is not as bad but inefficient IMHO ...In your case I would definitely try 32 & 64 as the others may prove to be too high.

I was always told aperture should = 50% of system ram size.

I think once I install my mobo that actually HAS a BIOS where you can CHANGE settings, I wil have to try that out. /me spits on dell

yes I've read that also ...don't believe it ...or should I say that 50% of ram is a good rule of thumb but not set in stone.

"Please note that the AGP aperture is merely address space, not actual physical memory in use. Although it is very common to hear people recommending that the AGP aperture size should be half the size of system memory, that is wrong!"

Check this article out ... http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=1 ...scroll down til you see "FREE Access to the BIOS Optimization Guide!" and click that and go down to aperture size.

Well it lowered my 3D Mark score going to 64mb ap. and at 32 it errored out :/

Well it was worth a shot ...I think that each particular card will have it's own sweet spot depending on a variety of details ...your cards sweet spot might just be at 128 ...mine is definitely between 64 and 128.

My computer wont even boot at 32, anything higher gives the same score.

    Hmmmm ...
    some strange 3DMark03 results

    217x12@2.06v (2.6gb)= 5895
    221X11.5@1.95v (2.5gb)= 5896
    221x11.5@2.0v (2.5gb)= 5924
    221x11.5@2.03 (2.5gb) = 5931
    213x12@2.03 (2.6gb) = 5878
    214x12@2.03 (2.6gb) = 5917
    215x12@2.06 (2.6gb) = 5916

it seems to be all about the fsb ...shame I can only get 221 out of it ...if I only had water cooling this chip feels like it could go far.

I'm done with cpu/fsb testing ...now to oc the vid card!

edit:/ now that this is burned in I can get 230 with tight memtimings and oc'ed vid card ...I should have waited a few more weeks I suppose.
  • edited November 2003
It's a combination of the ram bandwidth and the cpu speeds...A higher speed cpu at a lower fsb will not bench as well as a slower one at a higher fsb to an extent.
I think your results kinda bear that out.

well I upped the agp voltage to 1.7 and could only oc from my previous 393/366 to 393/393 ...I was expecting too much from the salman I suppose.
Anyway ...raised my 3dmark03 to this

    393/393 - 221x11.5@2.0v = 5974

I'm sure I can get higher by raising the vcore but idunno if i wanna go any higher on the agp volts ...is anyone running agp at 1.8v?

I am, but, I have the crappy FX card so your results may vary.

I like it aside from the biology project growing in my watercooler, I'm very pleased with it.
It's pretty stout and now that I got the bios all sorted out it's real stable and should OC like crazy.
