Aight...

I posted awhile back about mom and dads 400 cele that would not power on.. Well its back and its doing it again..

Here is the symptoms:

Press the power button and the system powers on for about 1 sec and shuts right back down..

You get fan spin, power light and HDD light all for 1 second and then nothing...

Remove the PSU from its location and it powers up fine, put the PSU back inplace and it powers up fine.

It will run fine for weeks then bam it does it again.

Im honestly stumped...

Either the PSU is dying or the mobo.. or thats my best guess... anyone got any ideas.???

They want to get a new machine but being that Christmas is next month they would prefer not to put out the cash for a new machine unless they have to..

Now for the insult...

I told them I could build them a new tower for about 500 and mom says to me... "well your dad and I were thinking of getting a Dell." I was dissed by my own mom lol...

Its not that I am anti dell, as a dell would be perfect for them as they only use office, email and surf the web, and the warranty would be perfect for them cuz then I dont have to support it, but they did not even consider that an option....

Loose connection in PSU?? Pulling it somehow jostles the wire or connection back in place, after reinstall the small vibration from sitting and running loosens it again over time??

Awww, how cute, ur gonna be big brother (or is it uncle?) to a Dell, congrats:buck:

I'd replace the PS first (it's cheaper) and then if the problem still occurs, get them a new cpu and board. You probably won't be able to find a board that will take a 400MHz Celeron (I assume it's a PPGA 370 cpu, right?)

New CPU and motherboard? Might as well gut the thing and start over. What do bet the hard drive is snail ATA 33? It's just one of the toss-up call they will have to make - new computer or 75% as much expense to fix the current machine.

PSU first, it may be a connector rather than internal, but it isn't worth the effort.
If it does it again tell them that the mobo is shot.
