Is this resolution for a special kind of monitor? I've always wondered why the ratio was different than 4x3 but it seems to be very common. Does it squish the image a bit when you use it?

I have no idea why it's used as a standard resolution when it's not 4:3, but it is, and it's fine. It doesn't bother me at all.
I resisted this for years out of fear that things wouldn't look right, due to the non 4:3 ratio. Then a few months ago I gave it a try. It may not be "Standard" by that definition, but it has become standard for me.
I have yet to notice any "squishiness" or distortion, and it's nice having that extra real estate for large web pages. Unless you have an LCD (which will have to fake it for anything except its native resolution) you should feel comfortable using it.
You know what, i think it DOES squish it just a little bit. I went and tested it for a bit and you can see it in things that are supposed to be round in normal resolution (like o's).
17, 18, and almost all 19 inch lcd's are 1280x1024, and they are so much squarer than a 4:3 monitor that if you're looking for it, it's obvious. a 4:3 monitor pratically looks like a widescreen compared to a 5:4 monitor.
i wish more companies (besides apple) made wide lcd's. a wide 20 and i'm all over it.
On my older Samsung SyncMaster 750s 17" CRT, I use 1280x1024 and have been for the last 3 years. It doesn't squish anything and gives that extra-needed screen real-estate for small-monitor users.
i used to use 1280x1024, but once i got my 22inch monitor, i changed to 1600x1200, at first everything was too small for me, but u will get used to it.
it's just a matter of getting used to.
i remember using 640x480 on my 15in gay monitor.
is that why so many games have the option to run at 1280x960 rather than 1280x1024, because it's due to maintaining the 4:3 aspect ratio? interesting...

When I went into powerstrip to make a 1400x resolution, I made it 1400x1120 so I could keep my nice squishy ratio.

I used to play Jedi Knight with 320x200 resolution with my 2MB graphics card.
