:respect: Alright everybody, here we go. I am going to build a Gaming/Multimedia computer and I need your help. I am starting from scratch with a budget of <$1500. Newegg.com is my first stop. What next?

I just did the same thing for a friend yesterday... If you're open to an AMD solution (I did follow your other thread) here you go:

    Motherboard: NF7-S 2.0 (Newegg)
Processor: XP 2500+ Barton (Newegg - buy the retail one for a few $$ more and more warranty)
    Heatsink: SLK-900A/947U (Newegg or SVC)
Fan: SmartFan II (Newegg - or Enermax Adjustable if purchased from SVC)
RAM: 512MB - 1 GB Kingston or Corsair (Newegg)
PSU: Antec True 430 or ThermalTake PurePower 420 (Newegg)
    Case: ???
Hard Drive: WD SE 80-120GB or WD Raptor SATA (Newegg)
Optical Drives: Lite-On 16X DVD and Lite-On 52x32x52 CDRW (On sale on Newegg today only)
Mouse: Logitech MX-500 (Newegg or Amazon)
Video Card: If you want video-in on it, I'll defer to SimGuy for a reommendation here.
    Monitor: Up to your discretion
    Keyboard: Same

Comes to approximately $620 depending upon inividual hardware choices, plus the cost of the video card, case, monitor, and keyboard.

Did I miss anything? Also, the processor can be overclocked to XP3200+ speed with no problem, especially with that heatsink/fan solution.

Good luck! If you want an Intel solution... there are many on the forum who are much better with Intel hardware than I am... :werr:

Price comparable for less performance, or performance comparable for a much higher price? ;)

It's Intel... you know better than to ask if it will cost more for the same performance. :D;)

With a budget like you can build one S-W-E-E-T setup. I'd reccomend finding all the the parts you want and than start adding all the bells and whistles. Just remember 512 megabytes RAM is essential if you want to play the absolute latest games at the highest possible graphics. I would reccomend a Radeon 9800 Pro/non-pro for all your gaming needs. You can easily get a Radeon 9800 non-pro for 250ish dollars off of ebay and flash to BIOS to make it a 9800 Pro. Believe me, you'll save a heckuva lotta money doing this (only do this if you're a cheapskate/overclocker like me). Good luck with your PC, peace out.

I am looking at NewEgg and I am not seeing the NF7-S 2.0, Who makes it? Is New Egg really the best way to go about getting Hardware?

Yes. Sorry; the NF7-S is the model number, Abit is the manufacturer. If you order anytime after about April of 2003 you're sure to get a 2.0 board. :D

    Lots of us like Newegg-
    1. decent prices
    2. good service
    3. great rma policy
    4. big selection

Buy your monitor locally. If you want big and bright go with a crt, a nice 21" trinitron or diamondtron is nice.
If you need lcd, look carefully. Don't believe or rely on specs. You must see them and decide. Make them unbox the one that you buy and power it up and look for dead pixels right there. It is easier to not buy it than try to get a replacements. THG has run some good reviews of lcd monitors.

What else, speakers, Logitech makes some nice ones. Listen and decide.

Yes, it's expensive. You could save money by swapping the motherboard & CPU for an ABIT NF7-S & Athlon 2500/2600/2800 and shrinking the hard drive, but in your other thread, you hinted that you wanted a huge hard disk and P4. :)

Considering this system packs one hell of a punch, especially the hard disk and video card, the price for such a device isn't far out of the budget...

    Antec Performance Plus 1080AMG Mid-Tower Chassis, 10 DB's, 430W PSU
Antec TruePower 430W PSU Included With Chassis
    Asus P4P800 Deluxe, i865PE/ICH5-R, AGP8x, LAN, 2xDDR400, Audio, USB 2.0, SATA

Samsung 1.44 MB 3.5" Floppy Drive, Black
NEC MultiSync FP912SB-BK 19" DiamondTron CRT, Aperture Grille, 0.24, 1920x1440
    Logitech Elite Keyboard, Black, USB
Logitech MX500 Optical Mouse, Black, USB
Speakers Are Your Choice (Recommend Logitech, Klipsch or Altec-Lansing)

The horrible total? $1690.00 USD. All parts are from NewEgg, except the monitor (NEC's best 19" DiamondTron monitor, an identical replica of the world's best 19" DiamondTron monitor), which was from CDW.

//Edit: WHOOPS! Had the wrong motherboard in there. You can't use the NF7-S with an Intel P4 CPU (well... maybe if you had a hammer and a few minutes....) :D

Perfect system, just needs a DVD burner (unless the Rom also burns) Can someone please compare and contrast P4 and AMD 64(fx)? That is a large portion of the cost now and I am curious if the whole 64 thing is just hype or if it has merit. What about USB ports? Are they easy to install, How many come on standard boards?

ourlove: The P4P800 has 4 standard USB 2.0 ports on the back ATX panel (the silver panel at the back of the computer that has all the different ports and such).

As well, it includes 2 onboard USB 2.0 headers that allow you to connect the included USB 2.0 riser card (it is mounted in one of the empty PCI slots in your computer) and adds an additional 4 USB 2.0 ports. :)

In total, there are 8 USB 2.0 ports on the Asus P4P800 Deluxe.

For a DVD-Burner, I'm really liking the Pioneer DVR-A06. It's a little pricey, but it burns CD's, CD-RW"s and both DVD R & DVD RW formats (the +/- formats). The Lite-On in the system I configured above is a combo drive, so it burns CD's & CD-RW's, but can also READ DVD discs, not WRITE them :)

Well, the 2.6 you are purchasing there is OEM, so it doesn't include a CPU cooler. Best to spring the extra few $$$ and get the Retail 2.6 CPU (includes a 3 year warranty and a heatsink/fan).

Don't use that Kingston CL3 RAM. First, it has poor timings, which will lower the total amount of memory bandwidth available in your system. Secondly, I don't see you purchasing 2 of them, which means you are only running in single channel mode. It is IMPERATIVE that you enabled Dual-Channel mode on a Pentium 4 system. Without Dual-Channel DDR Memory mode, the CPU will be starved for data, severely impacting performance. It's a drastic drop in performance that is very noticable during everyday use.

I highly recommend PC3200 Low-Latency memory that is designed for Dual-Channel operation. Corsair's TwinX XMS PC3200C2 has nice and low timings (2-3-3-6-T1) and is sold in packages that are TESTED at the factory in an Asus motherboard to guaruntee that they work in dual-channel mode. Either the 512 MB Kit (2x256) or 1 GB kit (2x512) will do you. You will be kicking yourself in the ass if you get cheap memory now.

You are also missing a keyboard, mouse, sound card, speakers, monitor, DVD-ROM drive (if you want it) and floppy drive.

Other than that, all you'll need is a phillips screwdriver, pair of needlenose pliers, a copy of Windows and a few hours of your time to put it together. :)

You want Kingston HyperX PC3500 Cas2 not the regular Kingston PC3200 Cas3

Corsair XMS3500C2 (Cas2) is a great choice also.

As for the Athlon 64 3200+ system check out Techreport Opteron review and see how the Athlon 64 3200+ (32/64bit) compares to the Athlon XP 3200+ (32bit)

**Take note that most Athlon XP 2500+ & Thermalright SLK900 combos will do 3200+ (2200mhz) speeds at stock voltage** No need to overspend. :)

For putting your computer display on the TV (say, for DVD or VCD viewing), you shouldn't need much of anything that doesn't come with the card, provided your TV has A/V inputs. If you intend to watch cable TV on your monitor you might need to rent another tuner box (if you have digital cable service). My cable company charges something like $4 a month for the extra box. For basic analog cable service you probably won't need anything, the included software should be able to emulate a "cable-ready" tuner just fine.

For video capture you might find the included software a little on the basic side. I'd recommend trying what is included with the card first; if it's not up to snuff you can always switch to something more feature-rich.
