I try searching manually for the "run" program in program files and window (because the search program also does not appear in start menu), but it doesnt appears to be found. I ask my friend they told me to go

properties
customize
advance
and then check the box with run command

That's not quite the right way to get the command back.

Right Click on Start>Properties>Start Menu Tab>Customize>Advanced> Then find the check mark for the Run Command.

    WINDOWS KEY + R.

I don't really know how to enable the run command if the check box is not there. It has probably been disabled by a system administrator as that checkbox simply does not disappear on its own.

HOWEVER.. If you hold the key that resembles the windows logo on your keyboard, then press the R key, you should receive a run box.

Yes good point if this is on a business machine they could have the run command disabled through Group Policy in which case you can't get it to work.
  • edited August 2007
is there anyway to enable it?
    what is group policy?

Is this actually a home computer or are you connected to a network? If you are on a network there is nothing you can do if it's through group policy. If you are on a home computer you can get to your security policies through the control panel>administrative tools>local policies.

if 2 computer is connect by a router can that be consider as a network?
if it is network how do i change group policy?
  • edited August 2007

See and there it is. It's probably been locked down through parental controls.

can you go into start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt?

Can you access it by pressing "Windows Key + R" at the time time

If you can someone had fun with a resource editor or regedit.

If it says its restricted your going to have to spend a long time in local policy editor and mmc.exe trying to find the right policy.

edit: Should have read the other posts first, Thrax already mentioned windows key + R.

edit: If you want to use mmc or edit the local security policys you have to do this in safemode as xp home is crippled and won't let you access these features in normal mode.

What is the desperation over the Run command? What do you need to do? Maybe we can find a workaround for you.

If you can get to command prompt you don't *need* the run command, it's just quicker version to issue commands.

    Go to local security policys

If you don't know what this is then don't go to it as you can easily set a policy that locks you out of your own machine.

Or you could just wipe the drive, reload and call it a day.

edit: If you do not have the cd's for your pc please download and fill out the Microsoft media replacement form.

well, my friend want it back, i mean its hard when u dont have both the "run" and "search" command rit? Well, personally, i need to use search more then run.

btw i find out that she have NOD32 and Norton Internet Security install. Would that be the reason y her "run" and "search" command disappear? caz both might have parental control

Its possibly but unlikely its likely caused by something under local security polices.

I had my sister's pc on a similar setup a year back everything that she or her friends could do to cause problems was restricted. (She would get insane amounts of spy ware and virus's)

Shes now on a mac and enjoying it, I enjoy her being on a mac more as I don't have to reload her pc every week.

the command prompt is the run command. anything you can do from run you just do the same in command prompt.

Search works to dir /s /p /ogen file*.*

    KidThief,
Somebody set that policy. It doesn't set itself. And setting that policy is suitably hidden to prevent it "accidentally" being set. I would suggest going back to whomever set the policies to get them lifted. Maybe it was the person that loaded up Windows on the machines?
  • edited September 2007
how do i unset the policy? well i know someone/something set it but um well anyway beside wiping the drive? since i dont know who set it i cant get them to lift it. I fink u are rit IndigoRed the person that load windows on the machines might have set it but how do i unset it? i mean the computer was bought over 3 years. how to go to local security policys?
    thx guys
sry for the late reply i was so busy
