OS won't boot - tried everything!

edited October 2007 in Hardware
Hi Everyone

I run Windows XP (sp2) and can't get

my OS to boot.

Here's what I've tried so far:

(in recovery console)

chkdsk
result: 'the volume appears to contain

one or more unrecoverable problems'

then..

fixboot
result: 'boot sector is corupt
fixboot is writting new boot sector
the new boot sector was successfully

written'

(so far so good, right?) - Err No

When I try to boot I get to the second

screen which tells me:
'NTLDR is missing
press any key to restart'

then tried fixmbr (recovery console) and

no change when I try to boot OS.

(I attempted the following from major geeks forum)

ATTRIB -H C:BOOT.INI
with similar entries:
'This system cannot find the file or

directory specified'

Heck, Can anybody help!

Had this problem now for last two days

and I work from home, without a PC

working I can't work :-(

Your help appreciated!

Further to the above post; I've tried also the following today with no luck

    (from Microsoft's website)
    in the recovery console I:

    typed:

    bootcfg /list

(response) 'there are currently no boot entries to display'

    bootcfg /rebuild

'failed to successfully scan disks for windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning use chkdsk....'

all the instructions I've been able to find to repair XP OS have commands which, when carefully inputed, come up with things like 'incorrect file' or 'no such synt
    ax' etc.

    Can anyone help....?

Your partition is probably corrupt if all that has failed. Stop wasting your time and just format and reload. (You did had backups right ?)

If you didn't have backups pop a knoppix cd in the drive and copy it to another machine on the network.

So you did try the Eight Command method? It's golden. If that didn't fix it, you'll probably either have to restore from a backup or reinstall Windows.

The last step in the 8 command method is chkdsk /f/r. Wouldn't that take care of the file system?

shouldnt that be number one on his list based on his post? He has a corrupted FS. It needs cleaned. Sometimes we do not need 4 links to differant guides. He needs to clean the FS.

    Hi

The problem I'm experiencing is that the recovery console doesn't accept my commands.

    E.g. when I enter:
    attrib -h c:boot.ini

I get: 'the system can not find the file or directory specified'

Is this because of corrupt files that I keep getting this message?

My data is backed up on another Hard drive every week (last one 5 days ago) and guess what - same thing happens with that one too.

I need the files off the hard drive (either one will do!).

I should have backed up on to CD but I didn't, who'd imagine loosing both drives?

    What are my options?

Can I use my working laptop to access the files by hooking it up with my broken pc?

How can I get these files.

By the way not very savvy so go easy on me with the instructions !!

A further point, I have a Norton Ghost CD which I believe can be used to recover lost files or even to reboot a broken OS,

    Anyone tell me how?

    Help appreciated guys.
