MJ, all the increased intake volume you can muster won't make any difference if you can't evacuate the heated air quickly enough out of the case. There's no point in adding another intake fan on that acrylic case if he can't match that increase with increased exhaust volume.

Truf, but it was more a point of sharing my experiences with the Antec 900 and the Scythe Infinity. Needed to shave the fan to get it to fit.

Oh, ok. I've got a 900 also. I removed the stock clear panel and made a new one, without the side intake fan. Two quite different approaches. The Tuniq 120 fits quite nicely with room to spare.

Antec 900 is awesome for cooling, although it won't be terribly quiet. Two (Can be 3) intake fans at the front, a side one which you can change to intake our exhaust and a 20mm exhaust fan at the top with another exhaust fan at the back. You also have room to replace the side fan with a 20mm fan again if you want  AND it looks good- I reccomend it

Please, Haru, fix your post!

Theoretically speaking, if I wasn't to notice these errors, of course I did, but if I wasn't to see them, what would you say they were?

Hahah.

Antec 900 is awesome for cooling, although it won't be terribly quiet. Two (can be 3) intake fans at the front, a side one which you can change to intake or exhaust and a 200mm exhaust fan at the top with another exhaust fan at the back. You also have room to replace the side fan with a 20mm fan again if you want (really just have no idea what you meant here) AND it looks good- I recommend it

The side fan mount is for a 90mm, I believe; were you saying you could cut more of the panel out and fit another 200mm? Very confused.

Oh dear god :S Yeah, I'll blame it on 10 hours sleep in 2 days thing :zombie:

I've heard you can add another 200mm fan to replace the 120mm side fan. Sorry, I'm not usually that bad :S I r Grammar/spelling snob :ukflag:

Mr. H, please get some sleep, come back, and start all over again. ;D

The 900 does not have a 120mm side fan, nor does it have accommodation in the plastic window to fit a 120mm fan.

The Antec 900 is NOT a noisy case. "Noisy," what, as compared to a case with no fans at all? Perhaps if you switch all four fans to the high RPM position. I can't imagine needing to do that unless you are grilling steaks inside it. There is such a great volume of air moved through that case, even at low and medium fan rotational settings.

Erm, leo... My 900 has a slot for a 120mm side fan. Unless you guys were talking about a stock Antec, in which case it doesn't have a 120mm side fan :P

EDIT: If I sleep now I won't get to sleep this evening, plus I'm pretty sure I'm an insomniac :P

Then perhaps I am incorrect and the 900 has been improved in newer series.

But anyway - FormFactor, I think all of us who use the Antec 900 are very enthusiastic about. It is a superb case. I wish I had several of them. It is one of the best designs to come out in the last five years.

Harudath, I may be the one who needs to get some sleep, to then come back and start over. I removed the ventilation (plastic with fan hole) from my case several months back and replaced with a complete window (also removed the mesh). It's quite possible I simply don't remember the hole size. I'll take a look tonight in my parts bin.

edited February 2008
Hehe, the mesh is the part with the 120mm slot in it :D It's got two prongs to clip a fan in. Don't worry though, if anyone here knows their stuff it's you, so don't apologise when you guys are teaching me so much

fwiw, I still have the original case, original door, with the original fan hole still in it, and I just went and looked. It's a 120.

Mj, we were having a moment there! lol

Recap: Antec 900 = Pure Win. It comes with two 120mm fans and a 200mm fan on top with another 120mm fan at the back. There's room for two more fans, one internal and one on the side, you'll need to buy those seperately if you want to use those slots, FormFactor.

Thanks again for all the prompt helpful response! I went ahead and ordered today, I went with most of your suggestions on pretty much everything but the case. I really like the look of those acrylic cases, so I went with one that has 4 x 80mm fans. I did however order four new fans with extremely high airflow CFM numbers to replace the cheap ones that come with the case. Anyways, heres what I came up with:

Case: LOGISYS Computer CS888UVBL Blue Clear Acrylic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Pre-Assembled - Retail

Replacement case cooling: 2x VANTEC TD8038H 80mm 84.1 CFM Case Fans

2x Rosewill RFX-80BL 80mm 2 Ball Bearing Blue LED 41.8 CFM Case Fans with Fan Controller Set

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping Kentsfield 2.40GHz 8MB L2 LGA 775 Processor OEM HH80562PH0568M SLACR

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS4 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Dynamic Energy Saver Ultra Durable II Intel Motherboard - Retail

Video Card: EVGA 512-P3-N841-AR GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

PSU: OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS ATX12V / EPS12V 600W Power Supply - Retail

RAM: OCZ Platinum Edition 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10004GK - Retail

HDD0: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

HDD1: Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500YD 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

CPU Cooling: Tuniq Tower 120 P4 & K8 CPU Cooler - Retail

CPU Thermal Paste: Tuniq TX-2 Thermal Compound - Retail

With FedEx 3 day shipping my grand total came to $1329.21

I'm a little concerned about how loud its going to be with all those fans, but luckily I have a very loud Klipsch speaker setup which should help deafen me to them.

I'll run some benches on it when I get it assembled and report back my findings. I am interested to see scores from 64 bit XP versus 32 bit XP, as well as 64bit vista versus 64 bit XP. 3dmark is still the best benchmarking tool out there isnt it?

Anyways, thanks again for all your help!

I really debated weather or not to get that Antec case, but this one is only 54$ and I'm a big softy for elaborate colorful PC cases. So if it doesn't work out I can always scrap it in favor of an Antec.

Personally, I'd drop the raptor in favour of another 500GB seagate and bump the power supply up to the 600w OCZ stealthxstream.
IMO, you can do much better on the case. Go for something that uses 120MM fans. They move a lot more air at the same noise level as an 80MM fan, and that will keep everything much cooler.
I'm a huge fan of the Antec Nine Hundred case. Lots of cooling, comes with decent fans that have a manual speed control, and still has a side window.

Please post pics when it's assembled. I want to see that beautiful, acrylic case with all the new hardware installed.

OK guys, I pulled out the plastic side panel from the parts bin. Yup, it accommodates a 120mm fan.

Yeah, I agree about the Antec 900 probably being the best choice for cooling. But it is a bit costly at around twice what I paid for this one.

Also this machine will be in the living room hooked up to the plasm, so I took my girlfriends opinion in to account. She definitely preferred the acrylic case over the Antec for more of a decoration piece. If this machine were going to be tucked away under a desk than the Antec would have been clearly the best choice.

Also my dad is a miracle worker with a Dremmel so I plan to look into maybe widening one of the 80mm fan holes, or maybe cutting a new one on the top of that case.

I came so close to ordering this SUNBEAM UFO CLEAR ACRYLIC CUBE CASE because it looks so bada55, and it has 2 120mm fans, but I was worried that my 8800 GTS wouldn't fit.

Actually I'm just going to order it, if my vid card fits I would definately prefer that case, and I can just return the Logisys case to Newegg. If not I can always return this one.

Do you guys think the 2 120mm fans would provide adequate cooling? Iv'e never seen a case quite like that before.

Also are any of you farmiliar with these SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA-300 Hard Drives:?

According to reviews on new egg it uses 3 high density 320GB platters rather than 4 or 5 smaller ones yielding a nice performance boost or "sequential throughput". Some reviewers are even claiming they perform better than 10000 RPM Raptors. I realize thats a bold claim and all, but the price per GB is so low, and the speed people claim they are getting out of them convinced me to scrap the 150GB Raptor for one of those.

But yea Ill definately post some pics of the finished product, as well as some benchmark numbers.

If I had better dust and dog hair control in my home I'd definitely have one or two clear cases. As it is now, I'd just be cleaning out the computer way too often.
