Brian; I know I'm late to the party, but this sounds like exciting news.
I can't help but question your decision, though. As a prepress manager you no doubt had a busy routine of eating donuts, doing shooters in the keyed managerial bathroom and updating / Editor-in-Chiefing Icrontic in your wee spare moments.
And you got a regular paycheck.
Why give that up?
Just out of curiosity, what print shop did you work for? I work for Goss International / Heidelberg Web Press. You may have heard of us; and may despise us.
clearly you have a good idea of what a prepress manager does
The shop was called MJA Graphics in Troy. Small all-digital shop, although at the end of my reign they had just installed a Heidelberg 2 color. The smell of ink and solvent pushed me over the edge
Their signature gear was a Xeikon 50d digital web, but they basically keep it in disrepair and don't use it fully, which makes no sense to me. They turn down a lot of work cause they won't invest the money to fully repair it. Jokerz4fun on this forum is the operator of that machine. It's a constant struggle for him to keep it in enough of a working condition to actually keep his job, despite a complete lack of managerial support to keep it running. It's a totally bizarre situation, and I don't understand it. It seems more emotional than anything - like they 'hate' the machine on principle or something and so they punish it by only letting it run half ass.
The other equipment are big digital color sheetfeds like Ikon CPP650s and a Canon 7000.
Very interesting... Before I started working at Goss/Heidelberg I was a programmer at a Chicago company that did digital print. We also had a Xeikon 50d, a Canon train (I don't remember the model, but one of those 100ft long monochrome laser imprinters), etc.
The Xeikon's are very difficult and expensive to maintain. We ended up getting rid of ours in favor of an industrial HP color laser.
Anyway, interesting stuff. I had no idea that there were others here in the (dying) print industry. w0rd!
1 year later TO THE DAY, I am now a freelance web developer for Short-Media (Icrontic's publishing company, heh). You thought shit was already crazy in Michigan? You have no idea.

Good call
one.
Grats Lincoln, this is exciting!
Last week was outstanding. Getting a ton of work done and finding lots of prospective clients coming out of the woodwork. Feeling good.
Good news, glad it's holding strong.
