    I'd pick the WD.

    WD no doubt

Yes deffinetly WD. Also if you're lucky enough for a local Circuit City to have one, they have the WD 120 GB Special Edition 8 mb for $19.99 after rebates. Apparently it's in an unlabeled package. It says 1 year warranty on the drive but it's actually 3 years. They've been selling like hot cakes as soon as word leaked, but maybe you'll get lucky.

Maxtor. I've had the WDs in servers, but not in my own system. I can't complain about them, though.

However, I've got 8 Maxtor DiamondMax 9s, and they're all quiet, cool running, fast, and reliable (so far, anyhow). I've got 4 160GBs, 3 80GBs, and 1 60GB; I really like the Maxtor drives, but you probably can't go wrong with the WDs, either.

Western Digital for the best desktop hard disk performance.

Seagate for second-best performance and the quietest drive you'll ever own.

Maxtor for good performance and noise comparable to the Western Digital.

Hitachi (IE IBM, W00T DeathStar) if you want to loose your data. :D

FWIW, my dad, who does network administration for my grandfather's company, has apparently had more problems with Seagate drives than any others. Most of the drives in the computers are actually Fujitsu units, and we haven't had one fail in at least 3 years, to the best of my knowledge (the computers with Fujitsu drives are at least 6 years old, too... P2/400s, 64MB, W95)

I wouldn't use IBM/Hitachi desktop drives just yet, though. My Ultrastar server drives have 5 year warranties, and have never been any trouble at all, and their laptop drives seem fine, but I don't trust their desktop drives anymore... not after the 60GXP/75GXP. I'll give it another year or two.

You're chances of getting a hard disk that will fail is practically the same from the big 3 EIDE drive vendors: Maxtor, WD & Seagate.

Maxtor's D740X-6L's were failing left, right and centre on one batch I received (batch being a gross skid of 144 drives).

Another batch of WD 800 BB's (2 MB cache) failed like mad too.

Seagates? I've had their Barracuda 7200.7 drives fail on me too.

It's just the pick of the crop and the luck of the draw.

Your chances of failure increase substantially when you choose IBM though. ;);)

Out of 6 WD's I've owned in the last year I've had 2 die on me.
On the other hand though I've got one that's 4 years old that works like a charm.

ive had 2x20, a 30, and 3x40 WD's... All are still working and range from 6mon to 4 yrs old....

..i just fear my luck will go bad and ill get a lemon. but from what it sounds, WD still the way to go...

    dont tell AMD that... :D

On both a Year by year and the past 10 years total Seagate is rated as being the most reliable drives made. I have had a lot of Seagates, WD's and Maxtors and have had more Maxtors fail than any of the others. I have been on a WD spree for my own as of late but for all machines I repair or build have Seagates. The only reason I got away from the Seagates in my own machines was due to their inability to be raided in the Barracuda III days but that has changed too.

    What he said! :D

I've been torturing Western Digital drives without mercy for years with never a failure. I don't have enough experience with Hitachi/IBM or Seagate to say anything definitive.

Ive never had a mator drive fail but ive only owned 2 and ive owned prolly 20 WD's and only 3 failed but they were like the cheap 5200rpm and were quite old when they died

Out of all the drives I've owned, I've only had one fail, and that was a Maxtor.

I'd still be fine with buying Maxtor again, however. One does not mean all.

    I've got 4x 120GB WD JB's, 1x Hitachi/IBM 120GB HD, 1x 60GB Seagate 7200 rpm, 1x 50 GB Maxtor 7200 rpm HD.

Never had any problems with any of these hd's, however I'll have to recommend seagate as they draw less heat and are very quiet.

If anyone has (or in this case hasn't) heard on of the new Seagate's, I say it is a must! These are by far the quietest drives I have ever come across!
