Nero 9 = garbage

I tried to install it tonight to burn an avi to a dvd, and I've had nothing but headaches.

The first time through, it kept on giving "Windows installer has stopped working" errors, so I tried to cancel the installation, which just gave more "windows installer has stopped working" errors. I ended the process tree, and tried to uninstall it. The uninstall option was nowhere to be found, but Nero had automatically associated itself with all the file types and added a metric f-ton of options to the autorun menu.

So, now i'm reinstalling it, getting all the "windows installer has stopped working" errors in the hopes that after the installation completes, it will let me uninstall it properly. And the setup takes about 30 minutes to run.

This is a piece of trash.

edit:

It finished installing with a "THIS INSTALLATION HAS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY" message. Now, as I attempt to uninstall, I am getting the exact same "windows installer has stopped working" errors. This is absolutely maddening.

    oh.
and it creates so many restore points that you can't restore to before it was installed.

    holywtfshit.

i ran their "nero 9 general clean tool" to remove all traces of nero.

look what is left, after uninstall, then the cleaning tool.

It seems most companies are heading towards bloatware. Adobe, AVG, Nero, just to name a few. I am also a fan of Nero 6 and I refuse to upgrade.

It isn't just that it's bloatware. It's that it is bloatware that doesn't work. It seems that this is a common problem for people - not being able to install correctly, then uninstall not working, then nero's cleaner tool not cleaning. And it breaks the utility of system restore by creating eleventy billion points.

I had a fun time with regedit removing entries, that did remove the autorun stuff, but i'm sure there's a bunch of other keys in my registry now.

In my opinion, this is nothing new for Nero. To me it has always seemed like something complicated that should be simple.

Except for Nero 6.5.x.x and earlier, when it did no such thing, and is (still) easily the best burning package.

Yeah. I remembered the pre-7 neros fondly, so I was shocked at how bad nero 9 is.

Protip: Always use the custom option when installing. Although I'm using v7, I only selected when I used (Burning ROM, express and Vision). Haven't had a problem.

While that is useful, don't you think that nero should have tested the default install to make sure that it, you know, installs? I'm glad they offer a trial version so I didn't have to pay for them to break my computer.

I think my Nero at home is 6 or 7 - don't remember. It works well - I just think it's overly complicated. Perhaps if I did more than CD and DVD data recordings and the occasional ISO my opinion would be different. For simple data copies to optical disk, the built-in Windows operation works just fine. So, you can see, my level of sophistication in this arena is not very high. :)
