Thank you Thrax. OK, what am I doing wrong. I got to the step 5 above, selected the "Download" button, ticked the "Save File" box, then selected a folder to save to. I then clicked "OK" and the computer promptly downloaded a 4kb .dlm file. What's happening here?

You should use IE for this leo

If you have FireFox 3.0.10 and IE tab, it'll work that way, though without using IE tab, it ran the download manager in a window, but I guess because of the servers being hammered, I got error messages. Downloading it now though, at 400-800KB/s, 4% done during the time it took me to type this reply

    --EDIT--
I do have a question about installing this when running in AHCI mode for my hard drives. Will I see any improvement over running in Native IDE mode?

At last, I will be trying this instead of considering Vista. ;)
    Goodbye WinXP :)

I even got my extra memory today, bringing the total to 4 GB.
Had to do an RMA since I received a DOA Corsair Dominator 8500 :(
BTW: Download is already 20 % complete yeah :D

EDIT: Btw the replacement module is using micron chips
But my other two sticks are Qimonda, but I guess it will be okay. ;)

Got it first thing this morning using the normall link and it downloaded at 4MB/s + on my 60mbit fiber.

Anyway, I'm currently running Vista and want to install this over the top. Would I need to reinstall all of my software after or should I be good to go straight away?

It will be a fresh install, so you'll have to reinstall everything.

Ok, well either way it's not really a problem just an inconvenience. The reason that I was a little confused over this was due to me not reading an email properly that I received from MS about the RC a week or so ago in which they said..

"Please note: All users of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (including Windows Vista users who have upgraded to the Release Candidate) must do a clean installation of Windows 7 RTM. Please keep this is mind as you consider downloading the Release Candidate as opposed to waiting for the general availability release."

I hadn't read it properly and assumed that Vista users who had not already 'upgraded' didn't have to do a fresh install. Oh well...

It was downloading pretty fast here as well.
850 Kb/S on a 10 Mbit ADSL, that is quite decent.
The dowload was completed in an hour plus a couple of minutes. ;)

EDIT: And it is actually installed as well.
Quite an improvement, it is really fast and responsive and I can use all the memory. ;)

Download manager works fine for me in FF 3.0.10. Runs as a Java app without a hitch.

I drank two cups of coffee waiting for the download over cable. I burned the ISO and left the disc and went onto other things. Later in the day I backed up files I had on a spare HD I have in my box and installed 7 on it. I downloaded Firefox, installed Nero 360, my video card drive, my printer drivers and Second Life. I then played. I am liking 7 better than Vista. Today I dowloaded virtual PC and have Windows XP running and just downloaded firefox in it. I'm a kid in a candy store now.

Ok, it seems Windows 7 RC1 loads slower with AHCI enabled compared to Beta 1 set to Native IDE, but I might be wrong.
  • edited May 2009
Yes, I can confirm this too. Windows 7100 RC 1 is xx% slower on the video end when installed on "my" T7500 intel laptop. I find this extremely disappointing as i was expecting 10% more, or at least the same as the W7 7000 release. Furthermore, overclocking the GPU did not make any noticeable difference..!? Tested this with nTune and ATItools. Somehow performance did not ad more then 4 to 5%..where around 30 percent is the normal situation in XP-Vista-W7 7000 . Lost 2 points on the performance scale.. Interesting :/ Working windows is more stable then on Vista( Or should we say W7 delta), some what the same as the 7000 release. Fingerprint seems to appear a little bit faster, but it takes the same till the system comes to an complete rest. There is going to be hell about this.

Just get the new RC1 release, you can get as many copies and keys for it as you want. It's good until next year.

I've been tracking the news and reviews on Win 7 RC. However, I just bought everything for a new i7 PC. Is it reliable enough to install now and use as the primary OS?

I've used every build since 7022 (the beta was 7000) on my main PC and never had so much as a crash or blue screen.

I'll second Thrax on that. Windows 7 has been performing very well on the 3 machines I've got it running on. One laptop, one dell and one vanilla box. The laptop is generall work stuff. The dell box I do web, video and audio editing on and other weirdness at work and the vanilla box is a game rig. They all are very different hardware, very different uses and very different rankings on the Windows 7 experience. All have been very reliable with RC1, the laptop did have some weirdness with the previous version in that it would crash anytime I tried to play video in media player (though VLC was fine).

However in RC1 no problems yet on anything. I must say, I'm an OS X person at heart but Windows 7 is impressive and I'm certainly going to be installing it on any future machines at work or home (well future non-mac's that is).

Where windows 7 really seems to shine is that the UI is actually usefull and helpful in it's short cuts, it's more organic feeling if you will. They've also bundled some handy little tools that you probably never really used but had to get eventually. The snippit tool for screen caps is great. Their integration for mobile devices is awesome compared to active sync. It's all around just a well done and modern feeling OS.

It's certainly stable enough to run on most production equipment. However keep in mind that it is just a beta and it does have a shelf life. When it runs out you'll need some other OS to install.

snark, you seem to have forgotten. Nothing worked in vista. Bluescreens all the time. You need to remember that vista was basically dos 6.02.

I've started the download and trying to get the drivers rounded up. Gigabyte has come out with the Windows 7 drivers for the audio, but not chipset. Where else can I get the drivers?

You don't need chipset drivers for 7 at the moment. :)
